Biden to offer public remarks about anti-inflation bill and recession prospects

President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak twice on economic topics on Thursday, following a report that's intensifying a debate over whether the U.S has sunk into a recession. Biden is slated to speak at 12 p.m. Eastern on congressional Democrats' newly struck $739 billion inflation-fighting package, and again at 2:15 p.m. on the economy as he meets with chief executives of businesses. U.S. stocks opened with small gains Thursday after a 0.9% annualized fall in second-quarter gross domestic product appeared to strengthen expectations the Federal Reserve will slow the pace of rate increases as the economy slows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 78 points, or 0.2, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each rose 0.3%.

Wingstop Inc. shares jumped nearly 13% in Thursday premarket trading after it reported second-quarter profit that beat the Street and, unlike many companies lately, maintained its guidance for the year. The chicken wing chain posted net income of $13.3 million, or 44 cents per share, up from $11.3 million, or 38 cents per share, last year. A call between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping of China began at 8:33 a.m. Eastern, the White House said. It's the fifth call between the two leaders since Biden took office. U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods are a possible topic of discussion, though a reporter tweeted ahead of the call that a White House official said Biden hadn't made a decision on lifting them before the meeting began.

Shares of clean energy companies soared Thursday, after Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin pulled an about-face and agreed to an economic bill that includes climate spending. Mastercard Inc. became the latest payments company to signal upbeat spending trends as the card giant posted a sizable earnings beat and said it had yet to see notable impacts from inflation on its volumes.

Shares of Fresenius Medical Care AG tumbled 13.7% in premarket trading on Thursday after telling investors to expect lower-than-expected revenue and net income in the second half of the year. The company, which provides kidney dialysis services, cited concerns about wage inflation and staff shortages in North America, higher inflation, and supply-chain disruptions. Fresenius shares are down 30.7% this year, while the broader S&P 500 has declined 15.8%.

Shares of Hertz Global Holdings Inc. rallied 3.3% in premarket trading Thursday, after the car rental company beat second-quarter profit expectations, while revenue came up a bit shy, and said it set a new $2 billion stock repurchase program. The company swung to net income of $940 million, or $1.13 a share, from a loss of $168 million, or $1.05 a share, in the year-ago period.
