U.S. consumer-confidence index has slipped in April

U.S. new-home sales decreased 8.6% to an annual rate of 763,000 in March, the government said Tuesday. That figure represents the quantity of homes that would be sold over a yearlong period of time if the same number of properties were bought each month based on the rate of sales in March. Compared to a year ago, sales were down 12.6%. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected new-home sales in March to drop to an annual rate of 770,000.

Carnival Corp. has named 48-year-old Josh Weinstein as chief executive of the company, succeeding Arnold Donald, effective August 1. Donald will become vice chair and a member of the cruise company's board. Weinstein, who has been with the company for 20 years, has been chief operations officer for the past two years. Carnival stock has slumped 32.5% over the last year.

U.S. stocks were lower Tuesday, failing to build on an upside reversal during the previous session that marked the Dow Jones Industrial Average's biggest intraday comeback in two months. The Dow fel 224 points, or 0.7%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite slumped 1.1%, with earnings from megacap tech giants Microsoft Corp. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. due after the closing bell.

Jack in the Box Inc. announced Tuesday that it has partnered with Miso Robotics to pilot the tech company's Flippy 2 and Sippy products in one of the fast-food chain's locations. Miso brings robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning to restaurant operations. Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. announced last month that it is testing Chippy, an autonomous kitchen assistant to help make tortilla chips. U.S. home prices rose in February at a breakneck pace: Case-Shiller

Shares of International Business Machines Corp. were little changed in premarket trading Tuesday, after the information technology company said it is raising its quarterly cash dividend by a penny, to $1.65 a share from $1.64 a share. The new dividend will be payable June 10 to shareholders of record on May 10. Based on Monday's stock closing price of $139.10, the new annual dividend rate implies a dividend yield of 4.74%, which is about six times the yield for the SPDR Technology Select Sector... The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-city price index posted a 20.2% year-over-year gain in February, up markedly from 18.9% the previous month. On a monthly basis, the index increased 2.4% between January and February. Meanwhile, the Case-Shiller national home price index increased 19.8% between February 2021 and February, up from the previous month. This represented the third-largest pace of home-price appreciation in the Case-Shiller report's history.

Orders at U.S. factories for long-lasting goods rose 0.8% in March and business investment rebounded after the first decline in a year, signaling the economy is still growing at a steady pace.
