The Nasdaq Composite hit a fresh record at the open on Monday, while modest opening gains on the S&P 500 put the benchmark index within shouting distance of all-time closing high. U.S. stocks' march higher was supported by upbeat earnings reports. The Nasdaq Composite began the day up 12 points, or 0.2% at 5,221. The S&P 500 opened 2 points, or 0.1%, higher at 2,129, a point below its record closing level. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 22 points, or 0.1%, to 18,109.

Shares of biotech Exelixis Inc. surged almost 50% in premarket trade Monday, after the company reported positive results in a late-stage trial of a kidney cancer drug. Exelixis said the phase 3 trial comparing cabozantinib to everolimus in 658 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma met its primary endpoint. Cabozantinib reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 42 percent compared to the everolimus arm, the company said in a statement. Amazon.com Inc. was upgraded to outperform from market perform at Cowen on Monday on expectations that it will dethrone Macy's as the largest U.S. apparel retailer by 2017. Analyst John Blackledge said Cowen's monthly retail tracker survey shows continued increases in apparel sales on Amazon.com as the company improves its selection and fulfillment capabilities. United Technologies' stock should be bought at current levels, said Sterne Agee analyst Peter Arment on Monday, who said the company's sale of its Sikorsky Aircraft business after 86 years of ownership represents a "positive first step" in the transformation of its business portfolio. Arment said while Sikorsky generated about 10% of United Technologies' (UTX) sales, it only accounted for 6.5% of its profits. Amazon.com Inc.'s stock rallied 1.7% in premarket trade, putting it on track to open at another record, after Wedbush Securities upgraded the e-commerce giant, citing significant growth opportunities in its Amazon Web Services, Prime Instant Video and payments businesses. Analyst Michael Pachter raised his rating to outperform from neutral, and boosted his 12-month stock price target to $575, after being at $435 for the past 15 months. Lockheed to buy United Technologies' Sikorsky business for $9 billion
Lockheed Martin said Monday it had net earnings of $929 million, or $2.94 a share, in the second quarter, up from $889 million, or 2.76 a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose to $11.6 billion from $11.3 billion. The results were better than the FactSet consensus for EPS of $2.66 and sales of $10.9 billion. The defense company, which said it is buying Sikorsky helicopters from United Technologies Inc. for $9.0 billion in cash, said it is also launching a strategic review of its government IT and technical services businesses. Lockheed Martin Corp. announced on Monday a deal to buy United Technologies Corp.'s Sikorsky Aircraft business for $9 billion. Including a tax benefit, the present value of the deal is $7.1 billion. The companies expect the deal to close by late in the fourth quarter of this year, or early in the first quarter of 2016. SunEdison to buy Vivint Solar in $2.2 billion deal
Renewable energy company SunEdison Inc. said Monday it has agreed to acquire residential solar systems company Vivint Solar for about $2.2 billion in cash, stock and convertible notes. As part of the agreement, TerraForm Power , an owner of clean energy power plants, will acquire Vivint's rooftop solar portfolio for $922 million in cash. Morgan Stanley said Monday it had net income of $1.81 billion, or 85 cents a share, in the second quarter, compared with $1.89 billion, or 92 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.
