Wenn es eine Sache gibt, die wir aus der Geschichte lernen können: Es wird immer eine neuartige tödliche Krankheit geben, die sich über den Globus verteilt.

Welche Bilder gehen euch durch den Kopf, wenn ihr an den Weltuntergang denkt? Asteroide, Weltkriege, Aliens, Klimawandel? Selbst wenn einige dieser Dinge durchaus realistisch sind, lauert eine viel größere Bedrohung unter der Erde, die zum Ende der menschlichen Zivilisation führen könnte — und nur die wenigsten wissen davon.

• The Bank of England is set to hike interest rates for just the second time since the financial crisis later on Thursday.
• Britain's central bank is expected to raise rates from 0.5% to 0.75%, taking the UK's base rate of interest to its highest level since March 2009.
