William Doan's wife asked him that question ten years after they got married. He laughs when he remembers it. There were, and remain, so many damn socks in their laundry because when William Doan wakes up in the morning he puts on two pairs.

"I had to sort of fess up at this point," he said, "and she was like, 'really?'"

Passive funds, which are basically index funds like exchange-traded funds, have been taking assets from active managers for some time, worrying those working in the business.

Index funds are cheaper and more transparent than their actively managed mutual-fund cousins.

The Shanghai Accord in its simplest form is a weaker dollar, a weaker dollar for imported inflation, a weaker dollar to stimulate U.S. exports (as noted previously here). It was a way for China to cheapen their currency without breaking the peg to the dollar.
