There's a twisted reason why this distant star flickers every couple of minutes

BusinessInsider.com

M. Garlick/University of Warwick/ESO

Every 1.97 minutes, 380 light years from Earth, a star in the constellation Scorpius brightens then fades.

Recently, astronomers using the ESO’s Very Large Telescope and NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, along with a handful of other telescopes, were able to figure out the extraordinary story behind this flickering star.

And the answer is something so violent and twisted that scientists could never have imagined it.

After Bloomberg questioned Trump's business acumen and called him a con man during his speech on Wednesday, Trump started referring to Bloomberg as "Little" Michael Bloomberg, reusing a moniker once reserved for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. Читать дальше...

Here's what $5 billion in buybacks got Google (GOOG)

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Chip East

Google parent company Alphabet said on Thursday that it has completed its first stock repurchase plan, spending $5 billion to buy more than 5 million shares on the open market.

And what did the company get back for that? Three cents per share, according to BGC analyst Colin Gillis.

He deems the buyback program a success because Google bought the shares for a lower price than where the stock is trading now.

The idea of buybacks is to reduce the supply of a company's stock. Читать дальше...

8 signs you should rent a home instead of buy

BusinessInsider.com

Despite the bruising housing market crash of 2008, home ownership still ranks up there with a successful career and happy family life as a key pillar of the American Dream. In fact, a recent survey found that 71% of adults say that purchasing a home is a top personal goal.

Buying often makes financial sense, which is why phrases like “renting is just throwing money away” and “it’s better to buy than to rent” have likely been drummed into your head.

I bought a home by myself and I'm under 30 and single

BusinessInsider.com

Zillow

By Katie Hawkins, as told to Natalie Wise

A lot of people think I’m crazy for buying a house by myself in the city. It comes up a lot in conversation. People think buying a house is something you do as a couple once you get married. But I don’t want to pay rent my whole life. I’d rather make the most of my money.

Still, every time I looked at the numbers for buying a house, they were big. But every time I paid my rent, all I could think about was how that money could be going toward a house. Читать дальше...

There has been no shortage of stories of what actors did on the set of "Suicide Squad" — from Jared Leto's disturbing "gifts" to Margot Robbie giving tattoos — but the latest one is still pretty bizarre.

The Russian Olympic doping scandal keeps growing, as now the entire weightlifting team from the nation is now barred from competing at the Olympics, the International Weightlifting Federation announced on Friday.

Weightlifting is arguably one of the most iconic Olympic sports in which Russians regularly succeed, so to see an Olympics without Russian weightlifters will be odd, to say the least. According to NBC Sports, Russia is one of the top four nations in weightlifting. Читать дальше...
