An economic professor's research explains which Facebook friends are the mostly likely to help you find a job

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

More than half of jobs are found with the help of a social tie, whether a friend, relative or distant acquaintance.

For example, a friend may tell you about a job opening at her firm or a parent may offer you an internship at his company.

For the eight million people in the U.S. who were searching for work in April, knowing which types of social ties are most likely to be helpful is useful information.

Who is more likely to help you land a job? Your close... Читать дальше...

13 foods that aren't what you think they are

BusinessInsider.com

There's nothing like a fresh bowl of pasta topped with wood shavings, emitting the mouthwatering aroma of petroleum product, and paired with warm, crusty bread that's been dipped in artificially colored soybean oil.

If that doesn't sound appetizing, then too bad, because you might have already had that meal.

With the recent discovery that wood pulp was being used as filler in grated Parmesan cheese, you might be wondering what else you're inadvertently eating. Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

You've probably heard that most Americans aren't saving nearly as much as they should for retirement. But it's not just carefree 20-somethings putting retirement savings on the back burner.

According to a recent survey by GoBankingRates, about 30% of those 55 and over admit to having no retirement savings whatsoever.

Meanwhile, 26% report having balances of less than $50,000, which is far behind where the average person in that age group should be. Читать дальше...

Harley Davidson just introduced its first flat-track bike in 44 years

BusinessInsider.com

Digital Trends

If you aren’t familiar with flat-track motorcycle racing, you really should do some Googling after reading this article. Fearless riders manhandle high-powered bikes around a dirt oval, drifting every corner and providing some of the closest wheel-to-wheel action of any motor sport.

What makes pro flat-track racing even more unique is the fact that it’s been done in nearly the same format, with almost identical machines, for decades. For that reason, news of a brand... Читать дальше...

We talked to futurists about what sleep will be like in 2030

BusinessInsider.com

Futurists are accustomed to launching headfirst into some very complex subjects, but even the most high-minded and enthusiastic of prognosticators may take a pass when it comes to dealing with the future of sleep.

That's no cop out.

It’s just that we humans — those in the developed world at least — maintain such a complicated relationship with sleep.

We are taught that we need it, seem to really love it while we're engaged in it and spend our waking... Читать дальше...

Donald Trump reacts to Obama's visit to Hiroshima: 'Why doesn't he discuss Pearl Harbor?'

BusinessInsider.com

Donald Trump on Saturday invoked the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor in reaction to President Barack Obama's Friday speech in Hiroshima, the site of the world's first atomic bombing.

In a tweet, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee criticized Obama for visiting the site while neglecting to mention the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

"Does President Obama ever discuss the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor while he's in Japan? Thousands of American lives lost. Читать дальше...

Tesla made a major bet to stand out from the competition — and now it might backfire (TSLA)

Tesla's cars are technologically impressive.

They're very fast, they can all but drive themselves, they can be summoned from a garage with no one at the wheel, and they are routinely improved by software updates over-the-air that allow owners to go to sleep and wake up with a new car in the driveway.

Everyone in the auto industry now grudgingly admits that Tesla has forever altered consumers' expectations for how advanced in-car tech should be.

Lufthansa suspends flights to Venezuela amid the country's ongoing economic crisis

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

CARACAS (Reuters) - German airline Deutsche Lufthansa said on Saturday it will temporarily suspend flights to Venezuela as of next month due to economic difficulties in the South American nation and problems converting local currency into dollars.

International airlines have for years struggled to repatriate billions of dollars in revenue held in the local bolivar currency due to exchange controls, prompting many to limit service and require that passengers pay fares in dollars. Читать дальше...

Report: Trump campaign indicates it's 'not going to have enough money' to fight Hillary Clinton before the convention

BusinessInsider.com

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

Donald Trump's mostly self-funded campaign now apparently needs help.

A report from the Washington Examiner says Trump representatives told Senate Republicans that the campaign "won't have much money to spend fending off attacks from Hillary Clinton" before the Republican National Convention in July.

Trump officially secured the party's nomination for president last week. Before that, the real-estate mogul's campaign said it would partner with the... Читать дальше...

22 signs your boss secretly hates you

BusinessInsider.com

Vancouver Film School/flickr

We all want to be liked at work — especially by our bosses. These are the people who make decisions regarding our promotions and pay raises, formally review our performances, and usually play a significant role in our overall happiness and success at work.

So if they don't like you, you'll want to know so you can try to turn things around. But that's not always so easy.

"If your boss doesn't like you, they'll likely keep it to themselves, as they... Читать дальше...

Here's why pools have that distinct smell — and it's not chlorine

BusinessInsider.com

So … pool smell.

Yes, pool smell. Most people would say that swimming pools smell like chlorine. In a recent survey, three-quarters of respondents pegged the chemical smell of pool water as a sign of too much chlorine.

So that smell indicates a super-clean pool?

Actually, nope, it doesn’t. That smell is not chlorine.

Wait, what is it then?

That smell actually results when chlorine reacts with something in your pool. What you’re smelling are chemicals called chloramines... Читать дальше...

Google is fixing one of the most frustrating features of its Chrome browser (GOOG)

BusinessInsider.com

Business Insider / Jillian D'Onfro

Google Chrome is fixing a huge pain point for its users.

In its next big release, Chrome is removing the keyboard shortcut that makes the "backspace" key return to the previous page.

This "feature" caused problems for many people who would inadvertently lose a whole bunch of information that they had just entered into a form.

For example, if you were filling out a survey or other web form and pressed the backspace key when you weren't actually focused in one of the text boxes... Читать дальше...
