Nelle Harper Lee died on February 19 at age 89. The Pulitzer Prize winning author had only published two novels in her lifetime, but is widely regarded as one of the greatest 21st century novelists.

Part of Lee's notoriety comes from anecdotes of her bold nature and unwillingness to succumb to those to believed her novel to be too controversial.

One favorite story comes from a 1966 local paper called the Richmond News Leader. When the nearby Hanover County School... Читать дальше...

Reese Witherspoon's lifestyle brand, Draper James, aims to capture the heart of the preppy southern woman — or those who aspire to be like one.

Consider it Tory Burch for those not on the East Coast.

The lifestyle brand and online store (there's one brick-and-mortar location in Nashville) launched last year.

The store sells apparel, accessories, and home goods. The aesthetic is very Pinterest-friendly.

But now, Draper James, which is named for Witherspoon's' grandparents... Читать дальше...

"Apple ought to give the security for that phone, OK?" Trump said at a rally in Pawley's Island, South Carolina, on Friday.

"What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time as they give that security number. How do you like that? I just thought of it. Читать дальше...

Up until just now, when he told us he had stopped eating it, the Dwayne Johnson cod diet was a big source of speculation. Was it safe to eat all that fish? (We were told... Читать дальше...

One of the world's most important programmers works from home in his bathrobe in complete silence

BusinessInsider.com

Linux Foundation

Linus Torvalds, the founder and maintainer of the incredibly popular free Linux operating system, spends his days working from home in a bathrobe in complete silence.

Torvalds revealed his work process on stage at this week's TED conference, the BBC reports.

It's a deceptively unassuming look for Torvalds, the man behind Linux. While not as well-known as Windows or Mac OSX, Linux is an operating system that powers the servers running the Internet. It also underlies... Читать дальше...

I left a position where I earned $500,000 a year — here's what I tell other people who want to quit their job

BusinessInsider.com

Courtesy of Susie Moore

Fourteen months ago, I quit my $500,000 job in corporate sales to work for myself. It was the best career choice I’ve ever made.

Since then, countless people, from readers of my blog to my close friends, have come to me saying they want to quit their jobs, too.

Here is what I tell them:

1. Change is possible.

First and foremost, you can live your life by design, or by default. You have free will and the right to choose your own path. This is your birthright. Читать дальше...

HBO

Martin has yet to publish the final two books, leaving many storylines open-ended and up for interpretation. But one fan theory is so widely believed by the fandom that it may as well be canon. The theory is known as "R + L = J" and centers on the question of Jon Snow's true parentage.

According to a majority of the fanbase... Читать дальше...

We've all done it. You have friends coming over dinner, and you want to make sure your wine is chilled in time, so you stick it in the fridge before heading out to work in the morning.

But then you forget about it, and before you know it, that bottle of wine has spent a week in the fridge.

According to Charles Smith — the so-called "rebel winemaker" and founder of Walla Walla, Washington-based Charles Smith Wines — that's a big mistake. Temperature is... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Netflix

In a time of sexts, Tinder, and Snapchat, Netflix's new romantic comedy, "Love," explores whether we need to try so hard to fall in love at all.

From executive producer Judd Apatow (HBO's "Girls," "Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin"), "Love" (available Friday) follows Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) and Gus (Paul Rust, also an executive producer) at the end of their respective messed-up relationships and into a potentially new one with each other.

But Mickey and Gus probably wouldn't meet on social media. Читать дальше...

22 things you should never say during an exit interview

BusinessInsider.com

AIGA RALEIGH/flickr

When you quit a job, there's a good chance HR will ask you to partake in an exit interview.

People tend to have mixed feelings about these conversations. Some say an exit interview is the ideal opportunity to be completely honest about your experiences with your employer and offer them critical and constructive feedback; others argue it's awkward and not worth the risk of burning bridges, as your criticism probably won't inspire any significant changes, anyway. Here's an entirely different perspective on why the 'big funds' see the majority of capital flows

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

One can't dispute that the majority of capital flows into the big funds, the Blackstone's, Carlyle's, Bridgewater's of the world, etc. We all know why, don't we? Well here's an entirely different perspective.

It simply relates to a breakdown in communication. Society has changed how it receives and processes information. Regardless of whether you are a teenager or a CIO, you handle information differently than you did 20 years ago. The alternatives industry hasn’t evolved. Читать дальше...

Scientists have discovered a mysterious boiling river in the Amazon rainforest

BusinessInsider.com

YouTube/The Boiling River

For centuries, Peruvian locals have talked about a river in the Amazon that burns so hot it can kill.

According to legend, Spanish conquistadors foolishly ventured into the rainforest in search of gold, and the few men that returned told stories of poisoned water, man-eating snakes, and a river that boiled from below.

For Peruvian geoscientist, Andrés Ruzo, the myth had fascinated him since childhood. But it wasn't until he was completing his PhD project... Читать дальше...

Harper Lee's original version of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was rejected — here's how the classic novel came to be

BusinessInsider.com

Universal

Very few Americans, young or old, haven't been affected by "To Kill a Mockingbird" — a literary classic widely read in schools and later in life.

But as the world mourns Harper Lee's death this week, one fact of the 1960 novel's publication remains little-known.

"To Kill a Mockingbird," when it was first submitted to its publisher, wasn't like the "To Kill a Mockingbird" we know at all.

It had a different title, "Go Set a Watchman," a version of which was published... Читать дальше...
