One of these two teams could claim an outright lead in the Torneo Apertura standings with a victory at Estadio Leon, though Saturday’s hosts look more overpowering after going unbeaten in five matches.
Leon has won twice during that run, as well as defeating Toluca on penalties after they drew 4-4 in their last pre-season friendly. America defeated Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo via penalty shootout on Wednesday after they drew 1-1.
Ismael Sosa scored Leon’s first goal of the Liga MX season against his parent club after joining on loan from Pachuca, and he’ll be hoping to add to his account in Week 2. Nicolas Castillo is also still a fairly new face in Mexico City after joining America from Benfica in February. He netted two goals in the recent win over Monterrey. He currently leads the Apertura charts in goals scored alongside Javier Aquino of Tigres.
Leon edged America into last season’s Clausura final via seeding after the two sides drew 1-1 across two legs. America will be out for redemption after that narrow exit, with manager Miguel Herrera out to mount another charge at the Apertura crown.
