A US Coast Guard helicopter lifted a man off a cargo ship in waters near Alaska after he began to suffer symptoms of appendicitis. Zachary Goelman reports. Footage released by the US Coast Guard shows a man lifted from a boat in the frigid waters of Alaska. The Coast Guard said a Jayhawk helicopter medevaced a crew member from the 652-foot vessel Snowy approximately 122 miles southwest of Adak in the Aleutian Islands on December 23. The 27-year-old man lifted from the boat was reportedly suffering symptoms of appendicitis.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Heather Menzies-Urich, who played one of the singing von Trapp children in the hit 1965 film, "The Sound of Music," has died. She was 68. Her son, actor Ryan Urich, told Variety that his mother died late Sunday in Frankford, Ontario. She recently had been diagnosed with brain cancer. OAKLAND, Ore. (AP) — The city of Oakland, Oregon, has given preliminary approval to a tax on motels. But the bed tax won't generate any money. The small town in southwestern Oregon has no motels or accommodations — except for a one-room, online vacation rental. CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago man is facing armed robbery charges after allegedly putting a gun to the head of an 11-year-old boy during a hold-up at a small community barbershop. The Chicago Tribune reports a Cook County judge denied bond to Alfred L. Williams, of Dolton, during a Saturday hearing. He cited what he called the "cold and callous nature" of the robbery in ordering Williams remain behind bars. A California Highway Patrol officer was killed when a driver swerved off the road and slammed into the officer’s patrol car, which was parked near an on-ramp to to Interstate 880 in Hayward, the CHP said Monday. Andrew Camilleri Sr. 33, of Tracy, a CHP officer since March, was killed in the crash at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, the Highway Patrol said.
