우리는 아직 지수를 모른다

지수 앞에는 주로 이런 수식어가 붙는다. 아름다운, 친근한, 쾌활한, 장난스러운, 밝은 그리고 달콤한. 하지만 그게 전부는 아니다.

지수(JISOO)가 디올의 블랙 드레스를 입고 성큼성큼 걸어 나왔다. 컷아웃 디테일의 실크 드레스에 뭉툭한 워커를 신고 스모키 아이 메이크업을 한 채 툭, 주저앉아 포즈를 취했다. 섹시하면서도 반항적이고, 어쩐지 터프한, 이런 지수를 그동안 본 적이 있던가? 저에겐 큰 도전이었어요. 와, 내가 이런 드레스를? 그래도 오케이! 해보자 하는 마음이었죠. <보그> 4월호 커버 화보와 네 편의 영상 촬영을 끝내고 인터뷰를 위해 마주 앉았을 때는 이미 새벽 1시가 훌쩍 넘어 있었다. 고요하게 가라앉은 새벽 공기 같은 허스키한 목소리, 동시에 한낮의 햇살처럼 쾌활하고 장난기 어린 말투로 지수가 말했다. 그 드레스 자체는 굉장히 성숙한 여인 같잖아요. 그런데 저는 어긋나게 가고 싶은 마음이 생기더라고요. 옷에 다른 느낌을 주고 싶다고 할까, 어? 이렇게도 보일 수 있네? 같은 의외성을 주고 싶었어요. 특히 이런 화보 촬영에서는 더욱!

패션은 강력하고 직관적인 메시지다. 그리고 아마 블랙핑크 멤버들은 비주얼이라는 언어로 자신들이 표현하고자 하는 바를 가장 효과적으로 전달하는 스타들일 것이다. 여기서 중요한 것은 태도다. 카메라 앞에 서기까지 수많은 회의와 치밀한 계획을 거쳤겠지만, 패션에서만큼은 결코 노력하는 것처럼 보이지 않는다는 얘기다. 세상에 없던 무엇을 시도하든, 타고난 듯 자연스럽다. 본능적으로 패션이 선사하는 순수한 즐거움을 아는 것처럼. 재미있어요! 저 역시도 저의 새로운 모습을 찾는 게 즐겁거든요. 누군가도 저를 보고 이렇게 변화를 주고 도전을 해도 괜찮다는 걸 느끼고 자신감을 얻을 수 있었으면 좋겠어요. 그러면서 지수는 가장 편안하며, 지수다운 룩으로 마지막에 입었던 베이지색 재킷을 골랐다. 처음 보는 느낌이었으니까요. 신선했어요. 디올이라고 하면 그저 심플하거나 사랑스러운 분위기를 연상하기 쉬운데, 최근 컬렉션은 굉장히 다양하면서 대담한 시도를 하고 있고, 성별의 경계가 느껴지지 않는다고 생각해요. 또 다른 면모를 발견하고 이미지를 파괴하는 일을 즐긴다는 점에서 지수와 디올은 닮았을지도 모른다. 기존 관념을 같이 부수고 있죠(웃음).

인터뷰 중 지수는 새로움 신선한 도전 같은 단어를 주로 사용했다. 돌이켜보면, 지수는 끊임없이 변화해왔다. 우리는 지난 6년간 화보 그리고 무대에서 자신만의 속도로 성장하는 지수를 목격할 수 있었다. 실제 지수는 데뷔 초와 비교했을 때 보컬과 춤이 도드라지게 향상된 멤버, 그리하여 지금은 탄탄한 발성과 가장 안정적인 라이브가 강점인 멤버로 호평받는다. 그리고 지수에게 성장이란, 단순히 테크니컬한 문제를 넘어 자신의 세계를 확장시키고 새로운 것을 흡수하는 인간적인 의미이기도 하다. 그건 얼마 전 본격적으로 도전한 연기에서도 마찬가지다.

새로운 사람들을 많이 만났어요. 저한테는 당연한 일이 다른 이들에게는 낯선 질문이 될 수도 있다는 걸, 일하는 분야가 달라도 비슷한 생각과 고민을 하고 있다는 것을 배웠죠. 세상을 바라보는 시야가 조금 더 넓어졌다고 할까요? 그리고 주변에 대한 관심과 배려에서부터 비롯되는 그 모든 성장은 삶의 주도권을 유지하는 방법과 건강한 자기애로 귀결된다. 연기를 하면서 저를 중심으로 지낼 수 있었던 것 같아요. 고민을 많이 했어요. 지금 나한테 필요한 건 뭘까?라는 질문을 스스로에게 던지고 그 의견을 말하는 과정을 계속 겪다 보니 조금 더 나를 바라보면서 살 수 있게 된 느낌이었어요. 결과적으로는 저를 조금 더 아낄 수 있게 됐다는 게, 굉장히 큰 도움이 됐어요.

주변 사람들에게 폐를 끼치거나 어둡고 예민한 분위기를 조성하는 것을 끔찍하게 싫어하는 지수는 블랙핑크의 무드메이커라는 수식어처럼, 산뜻하게 친절하다. 여담이지만 <보그> 촬영 현장에는 지수의 어린 팬이 방문했는데, 지수는 내내 단순한 팬 서비스 이상의 격의 없는 교감을 나눴다. 틈날 때마다 (잔뜩 긴장한) 팬에게 대화를 건네고 (지수와의 만남을 위해 헤어 살롱에 다녀온) 팬의 스타일을 칭찬하면서 마지막에는 나란히 앉아 사진을 고르기도 했다. 그 친구가 오늘 사진 다 좋았다고 하더라고요. 그래서 네가 좋다면 난 그걸로 됐다. 오늘 꿀잠 잘 수 있겠다! 그랬죠, 뭐(웃음). 그간 수많은 라방(라이브 방송)에서 보아온 모습 그대로의 지수가 거기 있었다. 이면 없이 긍정적인 사람, 대중 앞에서 상냥하고 진심 어린 모습이 어쩌면 진짜 그 사람 자체일 수도 있겠다는 순진한 기대를 확신으로 바꿔주는 사람 말이다. 제가 거짓말을 못해요. 얼마 전에 어몽 어스라는 게임을 했는데, 마피아 게임처럼 내가 범인이 아닌 척해야 되거든요. 대부분 재미있으니까 범인을 하고 싶어 하죠. 그런데 저는 범인이 되면 표정부터 우울해져요. 얼굴만 봐도 다들 제가 범인인 줄 알겠대요. 진짜 없는 얘기는 못하겠어요.

다른 별에 사는 존재처럼 멀고 반짝이면서 금세 친구가 될 수 있을 것 같은 묘한 친밀감을 주는 양가적 캐릭터. 친근하면서도 비범한, 쉽게 설명되지 않지만 대중적으로 공감 가능한 이 매력은 블랙핑크라는 월드 스타가 가진 K-팝 그룹으로서의 정체성을 공고히 하며, 선망과 동경을 이입의 영역으로 확대시키는 중심축이라고 해도 무방하다. 그리고 지수는 이 모든 것을 자연스럽게 해내고 조용히 받아들인다. <영국 보그>와 <포브스>가 블랙핑크에게 현시대 지구상에서 가장 파워풀한 걸 그룹이란 타이틀을 의심 없이 부여했을 때도, 전 세계 1위 유튜브 구독자를 달성했을 때도, 코첼라 무대에 섰을 때도, 레이디 가가와 함께 Sour Candy를 발표했을 때도, 디올의 2022 S/S 컬렉션 참석으로 파리 패션 위크 사상 최대 인파를 불러 모았을 때도, 지수는 일관되게 태연했다.

그냥 하는 말이 아니라, 사람들은 제가 엄청난 것을 이루었다고 얘기하는데 저는 잘 모르겠어요. 분명 10년 전에 레이디 가가의 노래로 연습을 했으니까, 콜라보레이션을 한 게 큰 영광이지만, 뭐랄까, 친구가 되어서 함께 작업한 느낌에 가까워요. 코첼라에서 공연했을 때도 실수 없이 이 무대를 끝내야 된다는 생각 때문에 이 무대가 얼마나 큰지, 사람들이 얼마나 즐기는지 체감할 수 없었어요. 다들 언니! 사람 진짜 많다. 너무 신나라고 좋아하는데 전 혼자 헉헉 숨 몰아쉬면서 몰랐어. 맨 앞에 있는 사람만 보고 했어. 정신이 없어서 그랬다니까요(웃음). 크게 와닿지 않으니까 변할 수가 없어요. 그래서 주위 사람들이 데뷔 전이나 지금이나 똑같다고 그러는 것 같아요.

바꿔 말하면 이건 주변 상황에 쉽게 흔들리지 않는 단단함을 의미한다. 저의 그 점이 좋아요. 휘둘리지 않는 저를 보면 뿌듯해요. 누군가를 보고 나도 저런 걸 갖고 싶다 나도 저렇게 되고 싶다 같은 생각을 하면서 정작 본인이 진짜 하고 싶었던 일을 잊어버리는 경우가 많은데, 저는 그 기분을 정말 싫어하거든요. 다른 사람보다도 내가 나를 봐주는 게 가장 중요하다고 생각해요. 큰 감정 기복 없이 할 말과 할 일은 분명히 해내는 것. 스스로를 끊임없이 진단하고 본인이 원하는 바를 정확하게 파악하는 것. 그렇게 현재의 상황을 단순하고 명료하게 받아들이는 것. 온 세상의 관심을 한 몸에 받는 셀러브리티에게 본인을 지킨다는 건 정말이지 귀한 미덕이 아닐 수 없다.

그래서 지수가 꼽은 수식어 또한 그저 지수다. 롤모델 같은 것도 따로 없고, 굳이 꼽자면 미래의 지수를 향해서 본인이 맞다고 생각하는 길을 차근차근 걸어가는 것. 가장 지수다운 계획이다. 저는 제가 더 스스로의 행복을 바라보면서 가는 사람이었으면 좋겠어요. 한동안은 그때그때 닥치는 일을 해결하면서 달려온 느낌이 있었거든요. 많은 일을 겪으면서 바뀐 마인드인데, 어느 순간부터는 내가 행복하려면 어떻게 해야 할까를 우선시하게 되더라고요. 그래서 미래의 지수는 정말 행복한 상태이고 저는 그 아이를 따라가고 있다고 생각하면 지금의 저도 더 행복할 것 같아요. 그렇게 지수는 고요하게 나아간다. 지수를 바라보면서.

JISOO, a member of the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, has been described in turn as beautiful, friendly, jolly, playful, cheerful and sweet. Impressive as these descriptors are, they dont really do her justice.

For her Vogue photo shoot, JISOO strides out in a black silk Dior dress with cutout details. Wearing round-toed combat boots and smoky eye makeup, she sits down casually to pose for the cameras. I dont think Ive ever seen her this sexy, rebellious and perhaps even tough.

Wearing a dress like this was a big challenge for me, she says at the end of the cover shoot for Vogues April issue. Still, I was like, OK! Lets do this. Its well past 1 a.m., and the session has included the filming of four videos. In a husky voice that reminds me of the stillness of dawn as well as the vibrancy of a sunny afternoon, JISOO elaborates: That dress makes me look very mature, doesnt it? But I felt like rebelling against that sort of appearance. I wanted to give the clothes a different feel. I wanted to introduce an element of surprise and make people realize, Oh? It can look like this? Especially at this sort of photo shoot!

Fashion is a powerful and intuitive medium, and it may well be the case that the world-famous members of BLACKPINK are able to express themselves most effectively on a visual level. What matters here is their attitude. While they surely must attend numerous meetings and plan meticulously before standing in front of a camera, they never appear to be trying too hard. No matter what groundbreaking ideas they are trying to express, they always look completely natural as if they were born to do this, as if they instinctively understand the pure pleasure that fashion can give.

Its fun! JISOO enthuses. I also enjoy discovering new sides of myself. I want others to see me and feel that its OK to change and take on challenges and to become more confident. When asked to pick the most comfortable outfit and the one that best represents her, JISOO chooses the beige jacket that she wore at the end of the shoot, explaining, Its because Ive never had that feel before. It was refreshing. People tend to associate Dior with simplicity or lovely designs, but I think their latest collection is varied and bold, and that it blurs gender boundaries. JISOO and Dior may be alike in that they both enjoy striking out in new directions and shattering accepted images. Were breaking down preconceived ideas together, JISOO agrees with a laugh.

During the interview, JISOO frequently uses words like new, fresh and challenge. Looking back, its clear that JISOO has been changing constantly. We have witnessed her growing at her own chosen pace in pictorials and on stage over the past six years. In fact, JISOOs singing and dancing skills have improved markedly since her debut, and shes become highly regarded for her strong vocals and consistent live performances. For JISOO, though, growth goes beyond improving her techniques and includes developing as a human being, expanding her world and absorbing new ideas. This applies to acting, which she has recently taken on in earnest.

Ive met a lot of new people, reflects JISOO. Ive learned that what comes naturally to me can feel unfamiliar to others, and that people in different fields of work have the same sorts of thoughts and problems as I do. You could say my view of the world has expanded a little. Shes learned that taking an interest in others and having consideration for those around you can lead to personal growth, teaching you how to take the initiative in your own life and develop healthy self-love. I think Ive learned to put myself first since I started acting, muses JISOO. Ive done a lot of thinking. After continually asking myself, What do I need now? and finding my own answers, I feel Ive learned to look after myself better. This has made me value myself more, and its helped me a great deal.

JISOO hates to cause trouble for those around her or create any kind of negative atmosphere. Shes kindhearted in a refreshing sort of way, and her nickname, BLACKPINKs mood maker, suits her well. I noticed that when a young fan of JISOOs visits the set, JISOO goes out of her way to interact with her. JISOO tries to talk to the nervous fan whenever she has a spare moment, praises her style (the fan went to a hairdresser before this event) and, after the shoot, invites her to help select the photos. JISOO later tells me with a laugh, The girl said that she liked all the photos we took today. So, I said, If you like them, thats what matters. I can get a good nights sleep tonight! This is the JISOO that weve seen in numerous live broadcasts someone whos always positive and lacks a hidden agenda. In fact, Im beginning to believe that her affable and apparently sincere manner in front of the public may well be her true nature.

Im terrible at lying, admits JISOO. Recently, I played a game called Among Us, which is similar to the game Mafia. If you get the role of the Impostor, you have to pretend that youre someone else. Most people want to be the Imposter because its fun, but when Im the Imposter, I cant help but look miserable. Everyone says they can tell that Im the Imposter just by looking at my face. Im incapable of even telling white lies.

JISOO has contradictory qualities. Shes bright and distant, like a being from another planet, yet at the same time, shes strangely intimate, so that its easy to strike up a friendship with her. Its safe to say that her unusual charm being approachable and extraordinary at the same time, being an enigma yet still resonating with the public is at the core of BLACKPINKs identity. These qualities allow people to idolize and admire the world-famous K-pop group as well as empathize with them. And JISOO does all this naturally and with quiet acceptance.

She has always kept her composure, even when Vogue UK and Forbes proclaimed BLACKPINK to be the most powerful girl group on the planet, when the groups YouTube channel accumulated the largest number of subscribers in the world, when they performed at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, when their Sour Candycollaboration with Lady Gaga was released and when they participated in Diors S/S 2022 show and attracted the largest crowd that Paris Fashion Week had ever seen.

Im not just saying this, but when people say Ive accomplished something great, Im not so sure, says JISOO. Ten years ago, I used to practice using Lady Gagas music, so of course it was a great honor to collaborate with her. But somehow, it seemed more like we had become friends and decided it would be nice to work together. And when performing at Coachella, I wasnt really aware of how large the stage was or how much the audience was enjoying the show, because I was preoccupied with completing the performance without any mistakes. While other members said, JISOO! There were so many people out there. This is so exciting! I just gasped for breath and replied, I wasnt aware. I was just focusing on the people in the front row. I was in a daze, she recounts with a laugh. I still dont feel very different, so its no wonder that I havent changed much. Thats probably why people around me say Im still the same as I was before my debut.

This all shows how grounded JISOO is she remained unfazed by everything around her. I like that quality of mine, confides JISOO. I feel proud when I find myself not being swayed easily. People often look at others and think, I want to have that or I want to be like that, and forget what they really wanted to do. I hate that feeling. I believe how I see myself is more important than how others see me. It seems that JISOO is able to say what she needs to say and do what she needs to do without emotional upheavals, to figure out exactly what she wants by constantly examining herself and to accept her current situation matter-of-factly. For a world-famous celebrity like her, being able to protect her identity is a great advantage.

Naturally, the word JISOO chooses to describe herself is simply JISOO. She doesnt have a role model. Her plan is to continue step-by-step on the path that she thinks is right for her toward the future JISOO. I want to be a person who focuses more on my own happiness as I move forward, she asserts. I feel that Ive been rushing ahead while tackling problems that pop up suddenly along the way. My mindset changed because I went through a lot. At some point, I started prioritizing what I need to do to be happy. So, if I imagine the future JISOO is really happy, and that Im becoming that person, it makes me happier now. Hence, JISOO is proceeding calmly, her eyes set on herself.
