US government agrees to $138.7M settlement over FBI's botching of Larry Nassar assault allegations

Times Union

The U.S. Justice Department is paying a $138.7 million to settle more than 100 claims that it badly mishandled allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar in 2015 and 2016. It was a critical time gap that allowed the sports doctor to continue preying on victims before his arrest. Nassar worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics. He’s serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes, including Olympians. For more than a year, FBI agents in Indianapolis and Los Angeles... Читать дальше...

Times Union

A 66-year-old Michigan woman has been arraigned on second-degree murder and other charges after prosecutors say she drunkenly cashed her SUV into a boat club that was hosting a young boy's birthday party, killing him and his sister and injuring several other people. Marshella Chidester didn't enter a plea Tuesday to the eight counts she faces in Saturday’s tragic crash at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County. During a court hearing that was livestreamed, Chidester’s right arm was in a cast from just above the elbow to her fingers. Читать дальше...

Times Union

GoFundMe is expanding into Mexico, the company announced Tuesday. That marks 20 countries now serviced by the crowdfunding giant. CEO Tim Cadogan says the for-profit platform is eyeing new international targets now that COVID-19’s unprecedented campaign levels have eased to pre-pandemic figures. Mexico remains a country where about half the population lives in poverty. Likeminded networks already exist in Mexico but Cadogan says GoFundMe is well positioned because of its strong brand awareness, advantageous... Читать дальше...

Wall Street is looking to Tesla's earnings for clues to Musk's plan to restore company's wild growth

Times Union

Faced with falling global sales and a tumbling stock price, Tesla has slashed prices again on some of its electric vehicles and its “Full Self Driving” system. It's an apparent effort to boost the company's earnings growth. But Wall Street was unimpressed and will be looking for other answers from CEO Elon Musk when Tesla releases first-quarter earnings Tuesday. For Musk, the answer appears to be the long-elusive robotaxi, which he has been touting as a growth catalyst for Tesla. Now, Musk appears... Читать дальше...

The Latest | 'Catch-and-kill' strategy to be a focus as testimony resumes in Trump hush money case

Times Union

The National Enquirer's former publisher is expected to return to the stand in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial as testimony continues in the first-ever criminal trial against a former U.S. president. David Pecker was the first and only witness Monday following opening statements. Prosecutors say Pecker worked with Trump and Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, on a “catch-and-kill” strategy to buy up and then spike negative stories during the 2016 campaign. Testimony resumes Tuesday. It's... Читать дальше...

Times Union

PepsiCo reported better-than-expected revenue in the first quarter on strong international demand for its snacks and beverages. The Purchase, New York-based company said revenue rose 2% to $18.3 billion for the January-April period. That was higher than Wall Street forecast. In North America sales were hurt by a recall early in the quarter of Quaker Oats cereal, bars and snacks because of potential contamination with salmonella. Tensions between Beijing and Washington are the biggest worry for US companies in China, report says

Times Union

A report by the American Chamber of Commerce in China says that simmering tensions between Beijing and Washington remain the top worry for U.S. companies operating in China. The survey of American companies said inconsistent and unclear policies and enforcement, rising labor costs and data security issues were other top concerns. The report welcomed an improvement in relations last year but said the U.S. presidential election was “looming large” over the future business environment. It said that... Читать дальше...

What to know about the Supreme Court case about immunity for former President Trump

Times Union

The core issue being debated before the Supreme Court on Thursday boils down to whether a former president is immune from prosecution for actions taken while in office. Never before has a former president faced criminal charges, so the court hasn’t had occasion to take up the question of whether the president’s unique role means he should be shielded from prosecution. Trump’s lawyers say presidents would be unable to function in office if they knew their actions in office could lead to criminal charges. Читать дальше...

Starbucks takes on the federal labor agency before the US Supreme Court

Times Union

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments in a case filed by Starbucks against the National Labor Relations Board. The case stems from Starbucks' firing of seven workers who were trying to unionize their store in Memphis, Tennessee. The labor board asked a court to intervene and a federal judge ordered Starbucks to rehire the workers. Starbucks wants the Supreme Court to curb the board's power in such cases. Workers at 420 company-owned U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since late 2021... Читать дальше...

Trump called this visa 'very bad' for Americans. Truth Social applied for one

Times Union

The social media company founded by former President Donald Trump applied for a business visa program that he sought to restrict. Many of his allies want him to curtail the H1-B program in a potential second term. Records show Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, filed an application in June 2022 for an H-1B visa for a worker at a $65,000 annual salary, the lowest wage category allowed under the program. The company says it did not hire the worker and says previous management made the application.

Without cameras to go live, the Trump trial is proving the potency of live blogs as news tools

Times Union

With cameras not allowed at former President Donald Trump's hush money trial in New York, live news blogs are coming into their own as an important news tool. During opening statements on Monday, CNN used a third of its screen for printed dispatches from its reporters in the courtroom. Live blogs were also big parts of coverage by traditional outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post and Associated Press. These outlets have used blogs for big events in the past, but unlike something like the Academy Awards... Читать дальше...

Jury: BNSF Railway contributed to 2 deaths in Montana town where asbestos sickened thousands

Times Union

A federal jury says Warren Buffett’s BNSF Railway contributed to the deaths of two people who were exposed to asbestos decades ago when tainted mining material was shipped through a Montana town where thousands have been sickened. The jury awarded $4 million each in compensatory damages to the estates of the two plaintiffs, who died in 2020. The jury did not find that BNSF acted intentionally or with indifference so there will be no punitive damages awarded. Attorneys for the estates of the two victims had argued that the railroad...
