In a statement, they said: "We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect... Читать дальше...

Watch: Highlights from Week 1 of the EuroLeague

Times of Malta

The EuroLeague got underway on Thursday and Friday with the opening round of matches which produced plenty of dramatic action. Maccabi Tel Aviv won by 17 on the road at Brose Bamberg while FC Barcelona Lassa scored a resounding 98-71 win over Panathinaikos at home... Читать дальше...

IS fighters to leave Raqqa... with human shields

Times of Malta

Syrian Islamic State fighters are set to abandon Raqqa in a withdrawal agreed with US-backed Syrian militias that have them surrounded, a militia spokesman said on Saturday, as the jihadists' defeat in their former Syrian capital edged closer. Officials gave conflicting accounts on whether foreign fighters would also be leaving the city, where the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been battling to defeat Islamic State since June. SDF spokesman Talal Silo said the foreign fighters would be left behind "to surrender or die"... Читать дальше...

Little evidence new cancer drugs improve survival

Times of Malta

There’s not much evidence to show that most new cancer drugs approved in Europe in recent years can help patients live longer or improve their quality of life, a recent study suggests. Researchers looked at 48 cancer drugs approved by the European Medicines Agency for 68 different uses from 2009 to 2013. At the time of approval, just 24 of the 68 uses for these new medications, or 35%, had evidence showing the drugs were better at helping patients live longer compared to dummy pills or alternative treatments... Watch: Lazio stun champions Juventus

Times of Malta

Ciro Immobile scored twice in a 2-1 Lazio victory in Turin as Paulo Dybala failed to save Juventus from suffering their first home defeat in Serie A in more than two years. The defeat meant that titleholders Juventus dropped five points behind leaders Napoli who won their eighth straight game by beating bitter rivals AS Roma 1-0 away with a Lorenzo Insigne goal, although last season's runners-up hit the woodwork twice. Ciro Immobile scored twice early in the second half for Lazio, the second goal a penalty... Читать дальше...

First flight touches down on remote St Helena

Times of Malta

The long-awaited first scheduled airline service to the British overseas territory of St Helena has landed - and, true to the much-maligned airport's chequered history, it was late. The UK taxpayer-funded development on the remote South Atlantic island welcomed its first 78 commercial airline passengers at just before 2pm on Saturday, approximately 45 minutes behind schedule, following their departure from South Africa. St Helena Airport, built with £285 million of funding from the Department for International Development (Dfid)... Читать дальше...

Lack of engagement is enticing youths to take drugs

Times of Malta

Lack of self-efficacy and engagement could push young people into substance abuse, a conference on addictions among adolescents heard yesterday. Senior lecturer Damian Spiteri was speaking about the needs of substance-abusing young people in Malta at a seminar organised by the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. He referred to a study among teenagers, aged 15 to 17, who reached out to Caritas Malta, which attempted to give voice to young people with a view to contributing to the provision of targeted services. Greens, Balzan end in a stalemate

Times of Malta

Floriana and Balzan converted their energies of the pre-game into a feisty encounter from which no one seems to have gained a lot after their 1-1 draw. While the Greens moved three points behind joint-leaders Gzira and Valletta before tomorrow’s game between the Maroons and Hamrun Spartans, Balzan are now four points behind the leading spot. At the start of the second half, Bojan Kaljevic rushed all the right flank and from a tight angle, he disposed of the ball calmly past the Floriana goalkeeper to shed first blood in the game. Leozinho goal earns Mosta win over Saints

Times of Malta

An inspiring performance by Brazilian Leozinho helped Mosta to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St Andrews at the Centenary Stadium. This was the Blues’ first win after losing in their last two outings to push themselves at mid-table with nine points. Meanwhile, St Andrews succumbed to their fifth defeat of the season despite putting on a positive display in which they would have deserved to at least emerge with a point. The game changing moment arrived on minute 68 when Leozinho was floored by... Читать дальше...

Watch: Wreckless driver in crazy manoeuvre

Times of Malta

The reluctance of Maltese drivers to use car indicators is legendary. But when you cut across lanes at full speed within inches of other vehicles it goes beyond breaking the law - it's utterly dangerous. Dashcam footage posted on Facebook shows a grey Peugeot 405 zapping through two lanes within a few metres to gain access to a secondary road. The incident happened on Friday around 5.15pm near Kennedy Drive, Buġibba. The footage has been passed on to the police. Spotted anything worth reporting on our roads? Читать дальше...

Six children killed as gunman attack school in Kenya

Times of Malta

Seven people, six of them children, were killed in northern Kenya on Saturday when unknown assailants attacked a school, officials said. Cattle rustling and clashes over grazing and farming land are relatively common between communities in the East African country's north, and often escalate into revenge attacks. The region also borders war-torn South Sudan, and arms smuggling is common, with Kenyan police having little control over weaponry crossing the border. In a report, Kenya's KTN television channel said four boys... Читать дальше...

United frustrate Liverpool in disappointing draw

Times of Malta

A cautious Manchester United frustrated hosts Liverpool as a lacklustre North-West Premier League derby ended 0-0 on Saturday with neither side able to find the creative touch. The draw leaves United alone at the top of the table on 20 points although Manchester City, who are now a point behind, can regain first place when they host Stoke City later on Saturday. Those hoping for a classic blood-and-thunder clash of the two most successful clubs in English football were probably being overly optimistic... Читать дальше...
