Bayern’s Lewandowski set to face Madrid’s shaky defence

Times of Malta

Real Madrid’s struggling defence will probably have to keep Bayern Munich’s deadly striker Robert Lewandowski at bay in the Bernabeu to reach the Champions League semi-finals. Real will be defending a 2-1 lead from the first leg of the quarter-final, which the Polish hitman missed with the shoulder injury that also kept him out of the German side’s 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. However, Lewandowski trained on Sunday and is poised to return as Bayern look for goals tonight... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Sliema Local Council has cancelled this year’s edition of the Sliema Arts Festival, saying the Cultural Fund for Local Government events and activities was being issued too late. "Having been chasing the Department for Local Government since last November, the scheme for funding is to be issued this month, making it impossible to plan such a festival which usually needs a minimum of six months of preparations, including coordination with local and foreign artists. "This is very unfortunate, given... Читать дальше...

Yields in the Eurozone, where are we heading?

Times of Malta

To say that Quantitative Easing in the Eurozone did not have its desired effect would not be a fair statement. True, it has taken a while to infiltrate into the wider economy, but over the past six months or so we are finally beginning to witness a more robust economic recovery in the single-currency region. Economic data has been resilient. Unemployment data has been creeping lower and has recently fallen to its lowest in almost eight years. Inflationary data has also been slowly ticking upwards... Women may be less apt to get surgery in war-torn countries

Times of Malta

Working as a surgeon in sub-Saharan Africa, Dr Sherry Wren could not help but wonder why so many more men than women sought her care. Her curiosity led her to ask Doctors Without Borders for data on surgeries conducted in its humanitarian projects in 12 war-torn countries in Africa and the Middle East. Between 2008 and 2014, the nonprofit organization performed the majority - 69 percent - of its nearly 50,000 operations in those countries on men, Wren and her colleagues found. “Working in low-income countries... The state of Arkansas has moved forward with its attempt to begin a series of double executions despite rulings in state and federal courts that the inmates are entitled to additional appeals.  The attorney general and governor are vowing to pursue a series of executions scheduled over the next two weeks even after the state's Supreme Court halted the first two lethal injections hours before they were to take place. The state's lawyers pressed the eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals to allow the executions to begin... Читать дальше...

More than a million attempts to access online sites from within Parliament, in three months

Times of Malta

More than a million attempts to access online sites, including X-rated and social media pages, were made from within the Parliament building over three months, official data shows. One of the attempts – unsuccessful because the government’s IT agency, Mita, blocked access – was to access a site featuring explicit images of 19-year-old actress Maisie Williams, best known as Arya Stark in the fantasy television series Game of Thrones. In the site, her face was superimposed on a porn star’s body as she was engaged in a graphic sex act. Читать дальше...

Steel, stimulus drive China’s strongest economic growth since 2015

Times of Malta

China’s economy expanded faster than expected in the first quarter as higher government infrastructure spending and a gravity-defying property boom helped boost industrial output by the most in over two years. Growth of 6.9 per cent was the fastest in six quarters, with forecast-beating March investment, retail sales and exports all suggesting the economy may carry solid momentum into spring. But most analysts say the first quarter may be as good as it gets for China this year, and worry Beijing... Читать дальше...

Jihadists in St Petersburg

Times of Malta

On April 3, the terrorist explosion in St Petersburg’s underground train station claimed 13 lives. Russia’s anti-terrorist authorities soon found that this indiscriminate massacre was a suicide attack, executed by a 22-year-old Russian (of Kyrgyz background) named Akbar Jalilov. Seeing such events unfold live, following Europe’s latest jihadist atrocities, this provoked me to profile some categorical and specific insights to explain suicide bombings, and attackers like Jalilov himself. Jalilov’s... Читать дальше...

Hobson’s choice

Times of Malta

On April 7, I was almost asked to disembark an Air Malta flight from Brussels because I refused to sit separately from my two underage daughters travelling with me. I had checked-in online and was allocated three seats spread across the plane. At the airport, I pointed this out to the check-in desk and was told to speak to the cabin crew. Once boarding was completed, the crew tried to persuade passengers to change seats. Few wanted to do so and I was told the best the airline could offer me were... Читать дальше...

Jum San Girgor

Times of Malta

Deeply rooted in Malta’s history, the feast of San Girgor has been a popular traditional event since the 1500s. The event, which according to popular belief is related to a general vow by the public on their deliverance from the plague, goes back to 1543 but may have started as early as 1519. This popular day is celebrated on the first Wednesday after Easter Sunday and originally consisted of a pilgrimage by confraternities from all Maltese parishes starting from Mdina and ending with a religious ceremony at the Żejtun parish church.
