Malta Stock Exchange doubles its daily trading hours

The Malta Stock Exchange has doubled its daily trading hours from three to six, bringing it in line with standards applied by other European stock exchanges.  The extended trading hours, which came into effect today, also form part of initiatives the Malta Stock Exchange is implementing according to the National Capital Markets Strategic Plan launched last October.  Its previous three-hour cap on daily trading was one of the shortest in the world, matched only by stock exchanges in Lebanon, Jordan and Jamaica. Woman seriously hurt after falling down stairs

A 62-year-old woman was seriously injured this afternoon when she fell down the stairs at a home in Naxxar. The incident happened at around 2pm on Triq Censu Muskat, with an ambulance called to take the woman, who hails from Naxxar, to Mater Dei hospital. Police said health authorities informed them of the incident at around 5.20pm, adding that they were investigating further.

Software trouble leaves Mcast students twiddling their thumbs

Scientists find new way to fight breast cancer

A new method of combating breast cancer has been discovered by scientists after they pinpointed a key driver for its growth and spread. Researchers found a protein called lysyl oxidase (Lox) allowed breast cancer cells to latch on to growth receptors - helping them grow more rapidly. This also allowed the deadly cells to advance through the body, their study found. Labour Party begins process to register as a political party

The Labour Party yesterday kicked off the process that will finally allow it to formally register as a political party under the new party financing laws. In order for the PL to register with the Electoral Commission, amendments to the party’s statute are needed. The party financing law is intended to regulate donations and make political parties more accountable and transparent. The man suspected of killing a Cleveland man and posting a video of the shooting on Facebook killed himself after a "brief pursuit" by Pennsylvania State Police officers today, police said. Steve Stephens was accused of shooting Robert Godwin Sr., 74, on a Cleveland sidewalk on Sunday before fleeing in a car and uploading a video of the murder to Facebook, becoming the subject of a nationwide manhunt. MFSA issues warning about virtual currency OneCoin

A poacher was slapped with a €5,000 fine and banned for life from holding a hunting or trapping licence after admitting to having shot down a protected bird last Thursday.  Anthony Galea, 56, from Mosta, was arrested after police received a tip-off that a protected bird had been shot at around 7.30am in Mellieħa's Aħrax area. Nearly 9,000 mainly African migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean this past long weekend after being put by smugglers in Libya onto unseaworthy boats heading toward Italy, UN aid agencies said.
