Donald Trump heads to Hillary Clinton-leaning states as he builds momentum

Times of Malta

Hillary Clinton aimed to hit high notes in the final moments of her campaign, hoping an uplifting message would wash away voters' disgust with the gruelling presidential contest. Donald Trump vowed he and his supporters would never quit, as he charged into unexpected territory. The candidates embarked on one of their final tours of battleground states, shifting to their closing arguments to weary voters deeply divided along racial, economic and gender lines. With national polls showing her retaining an edge... Читать дальше...

Mobile phone thefts plummet as police crackdown bears fruit

Times of Malta

Mobile phone theft has plummeted this year, with a police crackdown ostensibly yielding results. A detailed breakdown of mobile phone theft across the island, provided by the police, shows that while an average 2,500 mobile phones were reported stolen every year between 2012 and 2015, fewer than 600 phones have been pilfered so far this year. A Paceville police officer, who spoke to this newspaper on condition of anonymity, said increased police presence and regular rounds by officers in the crime-prone... Читать дальше...

Liverpool roared to the top of the Premier League, offering another dazzling demonstration of their attacking prowess under Juergen Klopp with a 6-1 demolition of Watford at an exultant Anfield. After Arsenal had missed the chance to jump ahead of overnight leaders Chelsea by only eking out a 1-1 draw with their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool were in no mood to squander the chance as they overwhelmed their hapless visitors. Liverpool's day could only have been improved if the woes... Читать дальше...

A good start to autumn

Times of Malta

Musically, it’s been a very busy October. Well, this practically applies to every month of the cultural calendar, delighting locals and visitors from overseas. People always remark about the quality and abundance of music which they do not have to travel too far to listen to. I wish I could have covered all there was to cover, but here I am limiting myself to some of the events during the second half of the month. There was a highly enjoyable recital of baroque music at the Manoel presented by Arts... Читать дальше...

Man United's big guns Zlatan and Pogba fire at last

Times of Malta

Jose Mourinho's wretched week ended on a high note as Manchester United's big guns Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba finally began firing, both finding the target in a 3-1 win at dismal Swansea City. Mourinho watched from the stands at the Liberty Stadium following his touchline ban imposed by the Football Association on Wednesday and was buoyed to see Ibrahimovic score twice -- his first league goals in eight weeks -- and Pogba net a superb volley. United, vastly improved after their midweek Europa League defeat at Fenerbahce... Читать дальше...

Mysterious itch

Times of Malta

There are many causes of itch-ing: allergies, eczema, psoriasis, chicken pox, measles. However, in all of these you can usually see a rash, red skin, lumps or something causing the itch. In the case of an insect bite, you will see the mark. In the case of neuropathic itch there are no marks on the skin, no lumps, no spots. Usually, the only sign is the redness of the skin after the constant itching causes scratching. This sometimes leads to bleeding in the case of frantic scratching of the skin.... Читать дальше...

Emerging towards the start of the second wave of Maltese heavy metal well over two decades ago, Forsaken are by far one of the most important bands the local music scene has ever produced and certainly one of the most successful Maltese musical exports ever. I caught up with bassist Albert Bell, vocalist Leo Stivala, drummer Simeon Gatt and guitarist Sean Vukovic for a chat about the journey so far, ahead of the band’s 25th anniversary concert at Chateau Buskett on Saturday. What are your earliest... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

The government has refused to comment on a secret deal allowing it to buy the €450 million power station if the European Commission rejects a security of supply agreement with Electrogas, the private consortium behind the project. The share call option agreement secretly signed in July 2015 gives the government the option to buy 100 per cent of the shares in the project should the Commission reject the security of supply agreement. The July 2015 deal was revealed by The Malta Independent in April but has not since received any media coverage. Читать дальше...

Moments of nostalgia

Times of Malta

Toni Sant: Remembering Rediffusion in MaltaMidsea Books, 2016. In the early 1990s, Ġużè Aquilina had a weekly series in The Sunday Times (of Malta) entitled ‘Meeting People’. My turn came up on January 17, 1993, when I had already been on radio and TV for 24 years. In his inimitable way the professor had asked me if one day I intended to write “an independent history of broadcasting”. I remember agreeing with the idea, adding that such a narrative would certainly be of service to the public and an appreciation of the pioneers’ dedication. Читать дальше...

A few months after, a military revolt against the Popular Front government of Spain was initiated. It was supported by conservative elements within the country. Carrying out a healthy heart self-test

Times of Malta

At the proverbial heart of the not-so-small matter of good general health lies perhaps the most important muscle in the body; the heart itself. This tireless little workhorse contracts rhythmically and consistently without fail, from inside the womb right through to our final moments of life. It squeezes blood out with each contraction, itself the natural transport system of the body, ferrying oxygen and nutrients to the life-sustaining organs and tissues that need it. Unfortunately, these days our... Читать дальше...
