Archbishop Scicluna warns against governance based on spin, obscure dealings

Times of Malta

“Governance based on spin, on obscure dealings, and on a constant reticence to allow public scrutiny, irrespective of the myriad laws and the solemn promises, is definitely not good governance," Archbishop Charles Scicluna said at the Independence Day pontifical mass this morning. "Government based on the Orwellian disregard of the truth will one day implode, whereas transparency and accountability are the values that will make us Maltese truly and rightly proud of our government,” he added. Doubts raised on Hanjin rehab plan as ships clog Busan port

Times of Malta

The South Korean court handling Hanjin Shipping's receivership cast doubt on the container carrier's ability to survive a restructuring, news reports said, as 13 Hanjin ships crowded waters outside the country's biggest port. A rehabilitation plan for the world's seventh-largest container carrier is "realistically impossible" if top priority debt such as backlogged charter fees exceed 1 trillion won ($896 million), the Seoul Central District Court said, South Korea's Yonhap newswire reported today. Times of Malta

Michel Platini could receive a pay-off from UEFA despite being banned from the game over a payment from ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2011. France has become the first country in the world to outlaw plastic cups, plates and cutlery, although the ban will not come into effect for another three and a half years.  A new law requires all disposable tableware to be made of 50 per cent biologically-sourced materials by January 2020, with the percentage rising to 65 per cent by 2025.  An estimated 4.73 billion plastic cups are dumped in France every year, and just 1 per cent of those are recycled. The new law is part of a broader effort aimed at reducing waste and carbon emissions. Читать дальше...

Napoli’s strong start fuels title expectations

Times of Malta

Last weekend, Napoli chalked up their third straight league win after beating Bologna 3-1 to go top of the Serie A for the first time this season as champions Juventus lost to Inter and Roma failed to clear a tough hurdle away at Fiorentina. Against Bologna, Napoli took an early lead, through Jose Callejon, but despite seeing more of the ball, they were unable to add more goals before half-time. For Callejon, this was his 50th goal since joining Napoli in 2013 from Real Madrid. After the break, Simone... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Prime Minister aloof and smiling

Times of Malta

With a 36,000 majority in the 2013 election, the Labour Party was perfectly poised to implement a quality leap in local politics. Yet, Joseph Muscat’s government did nothing of the sort. The promise of meritocracy was first to go, with the numerous government appointments to positions of trust. Accountability and transparency followed closely. Slowly, but surely, the optimism of the election run-up faded away and a new reality set in. Incredibly, the series of administrative blunders, scandals and... Читать дальше...

The document was made public last week. TV advertising practices

Times of Malta

Despite the strength of the internet where advertising is rife, television advertising has remained constant. The emergence of digital advertising has not diminished the television’s enduring appeal to advertisers. At EU level, television advertising has been for years strictly regulated.
