GDP growth in Oct-Dec quarter slows to near 7-year low of 4.7%

The country’s quarterly economic growth slowed to a near seven-year-low in the October-December period of 2019-20, dragged down by a contraction in manufacturing and electricity, as per the National Statistical Office (NSO) . The October-December GDP growth of 4.7% is the slowest in 27 quarters and slowest since the 4.3% expansion in the January-March quarter of 2012-13.

SC judge who praised PM takes a dig at critics

Supreme Court judge Arun Mishra on Friday took a dig at those criticising him for praising PM Modi at a recent conference, saying he had good things to say about many others but would refrain from doing so lest he is criticised again. ​​Justice Mishra’s observation came during hearing against SC's decision to seal ‘Learning Tree’ play school near Khan Market in Delhi.



Sensex suffers 2nd-biggest 1-day loss ever

The sensex suffered its second-worst single-day loss ever in terms of points on Friday, falling in tandem with global markets. Asian markets had lost 2-3% by the time the Indian market opened. The sensex fell nearly 1,000 points in early trade and slipped further to close down 1,448 points. The decline alone wiped out Rs 5.5 lakh crore of investor wealth.

Protests can’t infringe rights of others: SC

The SC ruled that one’s right to protest could not infringe upon the rights of others as it upheld the Uttarakhand high court verdict initiating stringent action against lawyers boycotting district court work for years. Uttarakhand lawyers had moved the SC claiming that the HC verdict violated their fundamental right to free speech to go on strike court work to protest.
