Mamata Banerjee indicated on Tuesday she was likely to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony on May 30 as it was a matter of “constitutional propriety”. Banerjee, who had skipped Modi’s swearing-in during his first term in 2014, said she had spoken to several opposition CMs before taking a call. ​Party sources feel her decision could be an attempt to de-escalate the tension that has kept Bengal on edge since the Lok Sabha election results were declared.

The government will decide on whether to refer the grounded Jet Airways to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office after a new minister takes charge later this week as an inspection by the registrar of companies showed alleged irregularities. Sources said that the inspection has suggested diversion of funds and added that the investments into Jet subsidiaries, including loans extended by the airline, needed to be probed thoroughly.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s cash-in-hand has plummeted to a meagre Rs 140 crore as of March 31 this year — its lowest since 2004 — in a direct impact of its massive dues from the defence ministry. The MoD owed the defence public service unit (DPSU) about Rs 14,000 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2019. Majority of the dues is owed by the Indian Air Force.
