A beloved zoo ostrich named Karen has died after swallowing a staff member's keys. The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center announced the bird's death in a social media post on Friday. The zoo said the ostrich had reached past her exhibit's fence and grabbed the swallowed an employee's keys. Zoo staff consulted with experts nationwide for help but ultimately euthanized the adored ostrich. Karen had been at the zoo since March 2023. Police in Los Angeles have arrested a suspect following a break-in at the home of Mayor Karen Bass. Bass says Monday that she and her family are fine. Los Angeles police say a suspect was arrested shortly after smashing a window to get inside Getty House around 6:40 a.m. Sunday. The home is the LA mayor’s official residence west of downtown. Cleveland will pay $4.8 million to the family of a 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a stolen car during a police pursuit. The settlement announced Monday is one of the largest in Ohio involving a police chase. Tamia Chappman was killed in December 2019 when a car driven by a 15-year-old boy jumped a curb and struck her as she walked from school to a library in East Cleveland. Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee says he thinks workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga made a mistake by voting to unionize under the United Auto Workers in a landslide election. A new report finds that the Mexican government has largely abandoned protection and enforcement measures for loggerhead sea turtles. That has led to a spike in the number of turtles being caught up and killed in fishing nets. Myanmar’s Vice President Henry Van Thio is stepping down. He served in the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and then continued in the position after the military ousted her to seize power in 2021. State television MRTV announced on Monday night that 65-year-old Van Thio had been allowed to retire for health reasons in accordance with the constitution. LONDON (AP) — A climate protester who could have faced up to two years in prison for holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants cannot be charged with contempt of court, a London judge ruled Monday.

Out of air and pinned by an alligator to the bottom of the Cooper River in South Carolina, Will Georgitis decided his only chance to survive might be to lose his arm. Georgitis told The Post and Courier of Charleston he put his feet on the gator and pushed as hard as he could. He says he somehow ripped his arm out of the alligator's jaws instead of off. Water levels in some overflowing rivers in Russia were starting to drop on Monday, but flooding remains widespread, Russian state TV reports said. Water will not fall below dangerous levels for at least another few weeks.
