Democrat's recount win could alter power in Virginia's House

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Control of the Virginia state House is still up for grabs as Republicans appear to have lost a 16-seat majority in one of the most agonizing ways possible — with a one-vote defeat in a dramatic recount election. A Democratic challenger could score victory Wednesday by a single vote, barring any issues with the certification process. That likely would mean a rare power-sharing agreement must be brokered between Democrats and Republicans. Shelly Simonds beat three-term incumbent Republican Del. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A winter storm packing winds in excess of 100 mph dropped about a half-foot of snow on parts of the Sierra and triggered power outages at more than 1,000 homes in the Reno area. A couple inches of snow slowed the morning commute in the Reno-Sparks area where several slide-offs were reported early Wednesday and chain controls remained in effect over most mountain passes. The National Weather Service reported a 114 mph gust of wind late Tuesday on Slide Mountain near the Mt. Rose Ski Resort southwest of Reno. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress and sweeping tax cut legislation (all times local): 12:05 p.m. President Donald Trump is celebrating the GOP tax legislation, claiming it fulfills his campaign promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, he says: "Obamacare has been repealed in this bill." But the bill only repeals the individual mandate, which imposes a tax penalty for failing to purchase health insurance — a significant, but small part of the law — rather... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a welcome lull in powerful winds that drove Southern California's massive wildfire, crews braced for the return of potentially dangerous gusts that could revive the flames. Firefighters used two days of calm conditions to build containment lines and set controlled fires to clear dry brush ahead of so-called sundowner winds expected to whip up Wednesday afternoon. "We are still on guard," fire information officer Rudy Evenson said. "It's been a very unpredictable fire and... Читать дальше...

The Weinstein Company on the Block: Bids Due Today

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Bids for The Weinstein Company are due on Wednesday, an individual familiar with negotiations told TheWrap. It’s unclear how many bidders may emerge for the indie studio by day’s end — and whether they will see the whole company or pieces of the operation assembled by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein 12 years ago. TWC was on the verge of bankruptcy back in November after the company fired Harvey Weinstein in the wake of several damning sexual misconduct accusations. The company bought time by... Correction: Buffer Strips story

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — In a Dec. 19 story about a South Dakota's tax break program that rewards farmers for planting buffer strips between their crops and polluted bodies of water, The Associated Press misspelled South Dakota Farm Bureau Executive Director Krystil Smit's name. The official's surname is "Smit," not "Smith." A corrected version of the story is below: SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Few South Dakota farmers have taken advantage of Gov. Other than a short break here and there, she's at her booth in Manhattan's busy Union Square Park nine hours a day from mid-November to Christmas Eve. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Uber has named Barney Harford its new COO, the same day the European Union's top court dealt it a blow, ruling that the ride-hailing company should be regulated like a taxi company and not a technology service. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Wednesday that Harford would oversee Uber's global operations, marketing and customer support teams beginning on January 2. Barney is the former CEO of Orbitz and serves on the boards of United Airlines and RealSelf.

Ratings: ‘The Voice’ Finale Drops 20 Percent From Last Year

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Chloe Kohanski’s got the voice, but NBC’s “The Voice” probably didn’t get the TV ratings it wanted with Tuesday’s finale. This season-ending episode slipped 20 percent in ratings from last year — though the decline is at least in part due to the late date. Last night’s “Voice” finale ran one week closer to Christmas than December 2016’s, which almost guaranteed lower tune-in. And to (continue to) be fair to the NBC singing competition, Tuesday’s live show was up versus the series’ May 23, 2017 season finale ... Читать дальше...

When it comes to holiday cards, which celebs do it right?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Holiday cards of the paper and stamp variety still get sent, so what does that look like celebrity to celebrity? Hugh Jackman of "The Greatest Showman" wasn't giving up any names, but he told The Associated Press recently there does sometimes feel like a competition this time of year. "Some of these holiday cards are remarkable," he said. "I'm, like, did Annie Leibovitz shoot this? We do kind of rate them a little bit. It's horrible to say." Jackman's co-star, Rebecca Ferguson, wasn't shy about a little name dropping... Читать дальше...

‘The Greatest Showman’ Is ‘Magnificently Idiotic’ and 6 Other Chaotic Reviews

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“The Greatest Showman” is failing to capture audiences as reviews are trickling in — the musical, holding a score of 40 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, is being described as “an awful mess” and a “disappointing circus.” “The actual movie? Send in the clowns. Michael Gracey’s directorial debut is a disappointing circus of thinly developed characters, overly earnest melodrama and song-and-dance sequences that are more like unrelated music videos sewn together for a threadbare narrative,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt wrote...
