Evan Longoria: Everything Giants fans need to know about new third baseman

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Evan Longoria, early in his career, was as well known for his “Desperate Housewives” sounding name as his play. The three-time All-Star third baseman is not related to Eva Longoria, but was heckled a lot about the nomenclature similarities; after his first All-Star appearance, the actress sent him a bottle of Champagne for doing the name proud and he responded by sending her several signed jerseys. By now, Longoria is better known for his baseball exploits, which include three Gold Gloves... Читать дальше...

For a different kind of family celebration: ‘Goodfellas’ on Christmas at the Roxie

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Is “Goodfellas” a great Christmas movie? The Roxie Theater thinks so. In a bit of crafty counterprogramming, the Mission District theater is again reviving what is becoming a Christmas Day tradition, screening Martin Scorsese’s violent 1990 Mafia classic. It’s the perfect movie idea for those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but it might appeal to those that do, too. Think about it: Mafia films are in some ways the ultimate family films, in that nothing — not even death — gets in the way of protecting the family.

Vos says he'd like to see closure of John Doe issues

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

(AP) — Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he's open to an expanded investigation into how former workers at the now-defunct Government Accountability Board handled secret John Doe investigations involving Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans. Vos said Wednesday he wants "to put this issue to bed." Vos supports Attorney General Brad Schimel's recommendation that six former GAB workers and three others be found in contempt for violating judicial orders related to the John Doe probes. Vos says new prison will be needed in Wisconsin

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he doesn't see any way around building a new prison to deal with overcrowding. Vos said Wednesday that he's received a report from the Council of State Governments that looked into Wisconsin's prison system. Vos says he hopes to publicly release the report next week. But Vos says given how overcrowded the state's prisons are, he doesn't see any way to avoid building a new facility. The state's adult prisons were designed to hold 16,560... Читать дальше...

Vos: Fetal tissue research ban doesn't have votes to pass

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says proposals attempting to limit or ban research involving fetal tissue obtained from abortions do not have the votes needed to pass. Vos said Wednesday that neither of two proposals is likely to clear the Legislature before the session ends in early 2018. One bill would ban the use of aborted fetal tissue for research or any other purpose. A coalition supporting that proposal includes the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, Wisconsin Family Action... Vos says 'dark stores' bill not likely to pass

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says a bill designed to force mega-retailers like Menards, Lowe's and ShopKo to pay more in property taxes is unlikely to pass the Legislature. Vos said Wednesday that he has "serious concerns" with the measure that's won bipartisan support and the backing of communities across the state. The bill is designed to close the so-called "dark store" loophole and increase how much mega-retailers pay local communities in property taxes. A string of court rulings... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEBI SALEH, West Bank (AP) — A 16-year-old Palestinian girl is being celebrated by Palestinians as a hero and symbol of a new generation after kicking and slapping two Israeli soldiers. The melee was caught on a video that has been widely viewed. In Israel, the soldiers' decision not to react to the seeming provocation by Ahed Tamimi, a curly haired firebrand, has stirred a debate about deterrence and drawn allegations that the army was humiliated. Amid an uproar in Israel, Tamimi was arrested Wednesday... Читать дальше...

Vos gives grim assessment for several hot-button bills

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Just call him Dr. No. Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos isn't giving several bills on hot-button issues much of a chance of passing the Legislature. Vos told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday that he doesn't think there's support for divisive measures supported by fellow Republicans. Vos says bills unlikely to pass include a measure to ban fetal tissue research on University of Wisconsin campuses and another that would allow the carrying of concealed weapons without a permit. Vos says workers compensation bill won't pass

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A bill that would add a fee schedule for medical care to Wisconsin's workers compensation law appears to be dead on arrival in the state Assembly. Speaker Robin Vos said Wednesday there is no consensus among Republicans about the measure that was introduced by a Senate committee earlier this week. Vos says he does not think the measure will pass. He says, "Until we have some kind of a consensus, or there's an outcry from every day business people, it just seems the issue languishes."... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards set a Jan. 19 deadline to reach a tax deal with House Republican leaders to close a $1 billion budget gap. If no deal is reached, the Democratic governor says he won't call a February special legislative session. Lawmakers would then have to craft a budget that strips the entire amount through cuts or let it linger unfinished until a June special session. No one has offered a specific proposal for slashing that much spending. The budget gap hits July 1. Читать дальше...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Lawyers for a Tennessee woman serving a life sentence for killing a man who solicited her for prostitution when she was 16 have petitioned the state parole board to commute her sentence. The Tennessean reports attorneys for 29-year-old Cyntoia Brown filed the request Tuesday to reduce her first-degree murder sentence to second-degree murder, which could allow for her release next year. Supporters say she's been unjustly punished, forced as a child into prostitution. Brown... Читать дальше...

Charlie Brown and the gang get a musical holiday

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The eloquent paean to composer Vince Guaraldi recently published in the New Yorker by jazz pianist and composer Ethan Iverson was — depending on your perspective — either an eye-opener or a welcome affirmation of timeworn truths. Guaraldi’s exuberant jazz score for “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” with its buoyant rhythms and cheerful, bebop-infused melodies, has become so familiar over the decades that it’s too easy to overlook the music’s virtues. In addition to its other pleasures... Читать дальше...
