LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas volleyball team will have to wait at least another year to move into a new home. Associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said Tuesday the volleyball portion of a $350 million fund-raising campaign to upgrade the university's athletic facilities is on hold for a year. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Marchiony said the delay will help Kansas build a state-of-the-art arena for the volleyball team and its fans. (AP) — Republican control in Virginia's House of Delegates could disappear next year and a rare power-sharing agreement may have to be brokered after a Democratic challenger appears to have won a recount on Tuesday by a single vote. Shelly Simonds beat three-term incumbent Republican Del. David Yancey in the 94th District in Newport News, 11,608 to 11,607, in a dramatic hours-long recount that ended only after the precinct ballots were exhausted and provisional ballots were examined. Paramount has made more changes to its release schedule by bumping up the Johnny Knoxville-led comedy “Action Point” from March 23 next year to May 11. The studio’s third “SpongeBob” installment is pushed back to July 31, 2020 from its Aug. 2, 2019 release date. Paramount also had an untitled Nickelodeon hybrid movie scheduled for 2020, which has been removed from the calendar. “Action Point,” previously called “Action Park” is based on a theme park in New Jersey. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is in Iowa on Tuesday to deliver a speech to progressives that could also aim to elevate his national profile. De Blasio is scheduled to headline a "holiday party" fundraiser in Des Moines hosted by Progress Iowa, a self-described progressive advocacy organization. De Blasio, who won re-election recently, said in a blog post last month he would travel outside of New York City to push a progressive agenda that helps efforts to flip Congress into Democratic control. NEW YORK (AP) — A defense lawyer says a Turkish banker should be exonerated at a New York trial that has strained relations between the U.S. and Turkey. Attorney Victor Rocco said Tuesday that banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla was a pawn used by his boss and a Turkish gold trader to help Iran evade U.S. economic sanctions. Earlier, prosecutor Michael Lockard urged a Manhattan federal court jury to convict. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The first of two units to be shut down at a coal-fired power plant that has been serving customers throughout the American Southwest for decades is no longer in operation, officials with New Mexico's largest utility said Tuesday. BRANDON, S.D. (AP) — Authorities say a student brought an unloaded handgun to a Brandon high school to sell to another student. Brandon Valley High School was locked down Tuesday morning after the student brought a small-caliber gun into the building. Superintendent Jarod Larson says police were called after another student alerted administrators about the gun, which was unloaded.
