A UC Berkeley doctoral student whose academic career changed dramatically after an architecture professor placed his hand on her upper thigh and proposed they become “close friends” has agreed not to sue the University of California in exchange for an $80,000 settlement, The Chronicle has learned. SEATTLE (AP) — They weren't just two guys who loved trains. Jim Hamre and Zack Willhoite were also bosom buddies in their passion for public transportation who had excitedly awaited the day higher-speed trains could zip through their home turf. MEXICO CITY (AP) — A bus carrying cruise ship passengers on an excursion to Mayan ruins in eastern Mexico flipped over on a narrow highway Tuesday, killing at least 12 people, officials said. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A grand jury has recommended continuing the investigation into the death of a Florida State University fraternity pledge. The Leon County grand jury on Tuesday issued a 17-page presentment order that says the investigation into the death of Andrew Coffey is not complete. County Medical Examiner Dr. Lisa Flannagan said in testimony that the 20-year old Coffey died of alcohol poisoning and had a blood alcohol level of .447 at the time of the autopsy. SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Fire officials in Rhode Island are offering up to $5,000 for information on a fire that significantly damaged a church. The fire happened Monday at around 6 a.m. at the New Life Worship Center in Smithfield and took about half an hour for firefighters to tame. The Providence Journal reports the blaze started in an outside trash storage area. The church was built in 1997 and is part of a complex that also includes a school building and parking lot. Almost all committed during the summer and early fall — the sooner to sign, the better.
