Opossum breaks into liquor store and gets drunk as a skunk

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An opossum that apparently drank bourbon after breaking into a Florida liquor store sobered up at a wildlife rescue center and was released unharmed. Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge officials say the opossum was brought in by a Fort Walton Beach, Florida, police officer on Nov. 24. A liquor store employee found the animal next to a broken and empty bottle of bourbon. Judge: Mom charged with killing 2 children is competent

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A judge in Dayton says a woman charged with fatally shooting two of her children is presently competent to stand trial. The Dayton Daily News reports that the judge ruled last month after reviewing a psychiatric report. Dayton police say 30-year-old Claudena Helton confessed to shooting 8-year-old daughter Khmorra and 6-year-old son Kaiden in the head in May to "save them from the evils of the world." Kidnapped Virginia woman died of 'undetermined trauma'

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — An autopsy report says a young Virginia woman whose body was found in North Carolina after police say she was kidnapped died of "undetermined trauma." TV station WVEC obtained the autopsy report for Ashanti Billie, a 19-year-old whose body was discovered Sept. 29 behind a church in Charlotte days after she went missing. Missouri 'high-risk' state for deer accidents

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Insurance companies have classified Missouri as one of three states deemed "high-risk" for deer collisions. The Joplin Globe reports that the other two states considered high-risk are Arkansas and Kansas, according to State Farm. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that accidents involving deer are common, but fatalities and injuries are rare. DALLAS (AP) — The children's book "Where's Waldo? Santa Spectacular" is among the 10,000 books banned from Texas prisons, but Adolf Hitler's autobiography "Mein Kampf" makes the cut. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice provided to The Dallas Morning News the list of banned publications and the more than 248,000 works that inmates are allowed to read. Guilty plea in federal witness' death

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans man has pleaded guilty to multiple crimes, including murdering a federal witness, in connection with a conspiracy involving robbery of drug dealers. Fifty-four-year-old Gregory Denson faces a possible life sentence. However, a plea agreement filed in federal court Friday states that prosecutors agree that a 30-year sentence would be appropriate in the case. Remains of Minnesota WWII vet laid to rest outside Seattle

CHISHOLM, Minn. (AP) — The remains of a Minnesota native and World War II veteran have been laid to rest in Washington state 65 years after his death. KARE-TV reports that U.S. Air Force Capt. John Ponikvar of Chisholm died in a plane crash 1952. Ponikvar's plane veered off course and crashed into Mt. Gannett in Alaska. Weather delayed rescue efforts and the men on the aircraft where entombed under ice and snow. A National Guard crew discovered parts of the plane in 2012 and reignited the search for the remains. Georgia panel on homelessness urges focus on mental health

ATLANTA (AP) — State lawmakers say Georgia needs to target mental health and substance abuse issues in order to address the needs of the state's homeless population. A state Senate study committee has released nine recommendations that it says will improve access to mental and behavioral health services. Remains found identified as woman missing since 2012

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — Authorities have identified human remains found by a deer hunter in northeast Ohio. The Lorain County Sheriff's Office said Friday that the remains found Oct. 19 in New Russia Township are those of Minerva Tripp. She was last seen in Cleveland in August 2012. New Russia Township is about 36 miles (58 kilometers) west of Cleveland. Tripp was 41 years old at the time of her disappearance. Man killed in shooting at Detroit casino hotel elevator

DETROIT (AP) — Police say a man has died after being shot in an elevator at a Detroit casino. The shooting was not a random event at the Greektown Casino hotel. Man sought in killing of his girlfriend added to wanted list

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A $3,000 reward is being offered for a man accused in the death of his girlfriend who was run over with a car. The U.S. Marshals Service says an arrest warrant was issued for 39-year-old Dominic Garcia in 19-year-old Samantha Sandoval's death in Albuquerque early on Tuesday. The Marshals Service says a fugitive task force is seeking Garcia and that he has been added to "New Mexico's Most Wanted Program." Garcia is described as 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and having green eyes and brown hair.

Michigan files lawsuit for imprisoned author's assets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Michigan wants the assets of a prisoner who has written a book of short stories about life behind bars. The Detroit News reports that the state filed a lawsuit against Curt Dawkins in October, seeking 90 percent of his assets. The lawsuit cites a law that allows assets to be seized to reimburse the state for housing a prisoner. Judge: Ex-treasure hunter will remain jailed for contempt
