«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK — The share of Americans who identify as white and Christian has dropped below 50 percent, a transformation fueled by immigration and by growing numbers of people who reject organized religion altogether, according to a new survey released Wednesday. Christians overall remain a large majority in the U.S., at nearly 70 percent of Americans. However, white Christians, once predominant in the country’s religious life, now comprise only 43 percent of the population, according to the Public Religion Research Institute... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DETROIT (AP) — A civil rights organization is demanding the cancellation of concerts by Kid Rock at a new sports arena in Detroit, saying his criticism of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was a "dog whistle" to white supremacist groups. Kaepernick, who is black, spurred controversy in 2016 when as a member of the San Francisco 49ers he knelt during the national anthem. Читать дальше...

Author of one surprise success starts again with ‘Sourdough’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Before Robin Sloan begins writing, he lets himself experience other things, allowing inspirations to come from outside of the pages. That meant, before his new book, “Sourdough,” even began to take form, learning how to bake bread. Following the unexpected smash success of his debut novel, “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore,” Sloan was in a daze, without a plan for what was next. “Imagine walking off an amusement park ride or something,” Sloan says by phone from his Berkeley home. ‘Alphaville,’ ‘Stalker’ are movies for these dystopian times

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Given recent events, dystopian films such as “1984” and “Planet of the Apes” are seeming more and more like documentaries than flights of fancy vision. But one thing hasn’t changed: They’re a lot of fun, even if now they might induce an extra heaping of increased panic. From the days of “Metropolis” through next month’s “Blade Runner 2049,” filmmakers have warned against totalitarian and fascist states, nuclear war, climate change disasters and loss of freedom, often with a bleak, eye-popping vision.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say underage drinking and a waterfall pouring down a staircase led police to break up a party at a Massachusetts Institute of Technology fraternity house. Boston police say the first floor of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house was being "operated as a nightclub" with low light, strobe lights and a DJ on Sunday night without the approval of the City of Boston License Division. Police say detectives observed someone under 21 with a can of beer. They say the frat... Читать дальше...

Alana, Este (pictured) and Danielle Haim are the sisters who make up the Los Angeles trio Haim, and they’re back with a new album, “Something to Tell You.” Even though the single “Little of Your Love” has received a club-friendly remix at the hands of Justin Bieber’s producer, BloodPop, the group continues to mine the vintage easygoing sound most often associated with its hometown, looking to acts as far-reaching as Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Wilson Phillips for inspiration. ... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Hey, 32 NFL teams? In case you haven’t heard, Colin Kaepernick is (still) available. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who started the national anthem kneel-down protest last year finds himself a few days out from Week 1 of the 2017 season — and still out of a job. Many people think that’s solely due to the now-infamous protest, while others simply see Kaepernick as a declining commodity between the sidelines. NBC’s “Thursday Night Football” analyst Mike Tirico sees both sides. Also Read... Читать дальше...

No charter school applicants as state tweaks cap

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — No new charter schools will open in Maine this school year or next year. Nearly 2,000 students attend nine charter schools in the state. There's room for one more, but it hasn't heard from any contenders. A 2011 law said Maine can only approve 10 charter schools until 2022. The $7.1 billion, two-year budget passed in July changed that law to allow up to 10 charter schools at a time. That means Maine can approve new schools to fill slots left open by shuttered charter schools. Читать дальше...

Oakland Pride a highlight of Bay Area summer

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Oakland Pride is hands down one of the highlights of a Bay Area summer. For all the attention its counterpart in San Francisco gets, this East Bay Pride celebration is one of the sweetest and richest events around. It is considerably smaller, of course, but that gives it a warm, community feel. This year, Oakland will have singer-songwriter Andra Day as its headliner. Her powerful 2015 ballad “Rise Up” earned her a Grammy nomination. In addition to the acts on the main stage, the block party features a Latinx Stage... Читать дальше...
