U. of Utah extends deadline on electric car discount program

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A temporary offer through the University of Utah and three car dealerships is putting people into electric vehicles at a discount. The program has been extended through Jan. 31 and is open to university staff, faculty, students and alumni, among others.

Kansas City man accused of killing father outside restaurant

(AP) — A 19-year-old man faces charges accusing him of fatally shooting his adoptive father outside a suburban Kansas City fast-food restaurant where both men worked. The Jackson County prosecutor's office said in a release Saturday that Shaquil Roland of Kansas City is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death Friday of his adoptive father, 33-year-old Antonio Dennis.

Iowa inmate serving life sentence for murder dies of cancer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa inmate serving a life sentence for murder has died in prison at age 69 after battling skin cancer. The state Department of Corrections says Robert Lee Kern died Saturday at the Iowa State Penitentiary. Officials said Kern died of natural causes. Kern had been in prison for first-degree murder since 1979 for a crime in Cedar County.

Man suffers back injuries in fall down elevator shaft

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a New York City man fell down an elevator shaft at a central New Jersey train station. The 36-year-old man suffered back and other injuries in the accident, which occurred just before 6 a.m. Sunday at the Albany Street station in New Brunswick. Authorities say the man was leaning against the elevator door and it opened, causing him to fall about 30 feet.
