Facebook to stop spending against California privacy effort

Technology companies, banks and industrial companies all rose Thursday as investors continued to let go of some of their concerns about the trade dispute between the U.S. and China. On Thursday: The S&P 500 index rose 21.80 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,663.99. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 293.60 points, or 1.2 percent, to 24,483.05. Feds boot Tesla from investigation into fatal crash

DETROIT (AP) — Federal safety investigators have booted electric car maker Tesla Inc. from the group investigating a fatal crash in California that involved an SUV operating with the company's Autopilot system. The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday it removed Tesla as a party to the investigation after the company prematurely made information public. US long-term mortgage rates flat to higher; 30-year 4.42 pct

WASHINGTON (AP) — Long-term U.S. mortgage rates were flat to slightly higher this week with the spring home buying season well underway. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages edged up to 4.42 percent from 4.40 percent last week. The benchmark stood at an average 4.08 percent a year ago. Long-term rates fell last week, following a stretch of increases in January, February and early March as interest rates generally rose. The average rate on 15-year, fixed-rate loans held steady this week at 3.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett's company plans to vote against USG Corp.'s four board nominees in another signal that Berkshire Hathaway may support Knauf's $5.9 billion bid to buy USG. Buffett's assistant Debbie Bosanek said Thursday that Berkshire will vote against the directors nominated by USG. Berkshire owns 31 percent of USG's stock and is the biggest shareholder in the Chicago construction materials company. IRS head sees huge task ahead to administer new tax law

Uber to up its background checks for drivers

ATLANTA (AP) — Delta Air Lines Inc. on Thursday reported a first-quarter net income of $547 million. On a per-share basis, the Atlanta-based company said it had net income of 77 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 74 cents per share. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 73 cents per share.
