The test was conducted over several hours Wednesday morning at a federal prison in Cumberland, Maryland, Assistant Attorney General Beth Williams told The Associated Press as the testing took place. North Dakota tabs Duhamel as tourism pitchman through 2019

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Even North Dakota's tourism director admits it isn't easy promoting a state where the first day of the new year brought temperatures down to a brutal 45 below zero. But having Hollywood actor and Minot native Josh Duhamel make the pitch helps, said Sara Otte Coleman, who heads the state's tourism agency. "He has increased awareness," she said. Among the least-visited states in the nation, the agency announced Wednesday that it will once again enlist the services of the star... Читать дальше...

Hidden cameras offer unique glimpse of animals in the wild

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — How does a bighorn sheep say "cheese?" Some charismatic critters caught by motion-detecting wildlife cameras seem to know how to strike a pose. But it's not just show business. As these devices get ever smaller, cheaper and more reliable, scientists across the U.S. are using them to document elusive creatures like never before. "There's no doubt — it is an incredible tool to acquire data on wildlife," said Grant Harris, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Читать дальше...

Senators grill social media companies over terrorist posts

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawmakers grilled executives Facebook, Google's YouTube and Twitter on Wednesday about what the companies are doing to prevent terrorists from using their platforms to spread propaganda and recruit new followers. The Senate's commerce, science and transportation committee hearing comes amid growing government scrutiny over misuse of social media platforms and questions about what the companies are doing to prevent it. And it comes after November's exhaustive congressional hearings on what the companies knew ... Читать дальше...

Humans will review video from most popular YouTube creators

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Google says humans will now review video from its most popular YouTube creators after recent complaints. The videos being targeted are ones Google packages to advertisers as "preferred" content. While Google has had human reviewers before, it relies heavily on software to flag potential problems. YouTube was criticized for moving too slowly after one of its stars, Logan Paul, posted video of what appears to be a suicide victim. Google said Tuesday evening that it will impose tougher... Hilinski's family in California issued a statement saying they are in "complete shock" over his death. Hilinski backed up Luke Falk this season... Читать дальше...

Scientists seek super-shot for flu 100 years after pandemic

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The descriptions are haunting. Some victims felt fine in the morning and were dead by night. Faces turned blue as patients coughed up blood. Stacked bodies outnumbered coffins. A century after one of history's most catastrophic disease outbreaks, scientists are rethinking how to guard against another super-flu like the 1918 influenza that killed tens of millions as it swept the globe. There's no way to predict what strain of the shape-shifting flu virus could trigger another pandemic or... Читать дальше...

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is planning to build another corporate campus and hire 20,000 workers during the next five years as part of a $350 billion commitment to the U.S. economy. The pledge announced Wednesday is an offshoot from the sweeping overhaul of the U.S. tax code championed by President Donald Trump and approved by Congress last month. Hundreds took part in a march in Warsaw on Wednesday but it wasn't immediately clear how many took place in other cities. The turnout appeared far smaller than similar marches which mobilized huge crowds in 2016. The march, organized by a group known as the Women's Strike... Читать дальше...

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

PARIS (AP) — French officials plan to loan the historic Bayeux Tapestry to Britain, allowing the 11th-century artwork depicting the conquest of England to leave France for the first time in centuries. The mayor of the Normandy town of Bayeux, Patrick Gomont, said Wednesday that the loan is about five years away because restoration work is required to ensure the fragile 70-meter (230-foot) cloth isn't damaged in transit. It currently resides in a museum in the town. The Times of London newspaper reported... Читать дальше...
