The for-profit education company said its chief financial officer is stepping down and its stock was downgraded by Credit Suisse.

AP FACT CHECK: Trumped-up charge on "Obamacare" premiums

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says the Obama administration plans to keep consumers in the dark about premium increases for 2017 under the president's health care law — for political reasons. Nov. 1 is actually the long-designated start of the 2017 sign-up season under President Barack Obama's health care law, not the date for the unveiling of premium levels. Clare Krusing, spokeswoman for the main industry trade group, America's Health Insurance Plans, said there's no indication the administration plans to change the date. Читать дальше...

Louvre, Orsay museums close as Seine overflows in Paris

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

PARIS (AP) — The rising waters of the Seine overflowed riverbanks, roads and rail tracks across Paris on Thursday, forcing authorities at the Louvre to do something they have not done in generations: hurriedly move precious artworks to higher ground. Paris police upgraded their flood warning Thursday to "orange" — the second-highest level — for areas near the Seine, which means they believe the floods could have "a significant impact" on buildings and people. European rivers have burst their banks... Читать дальше...

Prince's death adds to opioid overdose epidemic's grim toll

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Autopsy results released Thursday show Prince died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, but did not indicate whether the drug had been prescribed to him by a physician. Because of the risk of abuse, overdose and addiction, the Food and Drug Administration imposes tight restrictions on fentanyl; it is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance. [...] most fentanyl used illicitly is manufactured in clandestine labs. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has tied fentanyl seizures to Mexican drug-trafficking groups. Читать дальше...

The Latest: Friends don't believe 'Purge' slayings charges

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Friends of a 19-year-old Indianapolis man say they don't believe he was the type of person who would have fatally shot three people over four nights in attacks authorities say were inspired by horror movie "The Purge." Police said this refers to the 2013 movie starring Ethan Hawke in which crimes could be committed without fear of prosecution over a 12-hour period once a year. A 19-year-old Indianapolis man is charged with killing three people over four nights, and authorities say he was inspired... Читать дальше...

Ex-Oracle employee accuses company of accounting chicanery

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A former employee in Oracle's finance department is accusing the business software maker of trying to pressure her into cooking the books in an effort to boost the company's stock price. The performance of Oracle's "cloud services" division has become increasingly important to investors as more companies and government agencies have decided to lease their software stored in remote data centers instead of buying the licensing rights to applications that are installed on the hard drives of individual computers.

United CEO aims to win back high-paying business travelers

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Seth Kaplan, managing partner of industry newsletter Airline Weekly, says the new seats will let United match business-class offerings from American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Traditionally, in the airline industry, some of the more-senior flight attendants — the ones who often get international flights — aren't as enthusiastic or friendly as passengers hope. The flight attendants union said Thursday that a new contract would improve both employee morale and the customer experience. In January... Читать дальше...

Urban Family Brewing extends hours for the summer months

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Story by Kendall Jones, via Washington Beer Blog. Story by Kendall Jones, via Washington Beer Blog. I recently paid a visit to one of Seattle’s less talked-about breweries. The fact that they don’t get more fanfare really doesn’t make a lot of sense once you taste the beer. I’m talking about Urban Family Brewing, located in Interbay, not far from Fishermen’s Terminal. Today... The post Urban Family Brewing extends hours for the summer months appeared first on Beer News.

Global energy leaders look to nitty gritty of climate accord

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

"The urgency of this threat keeps growing," President Barack Obama said in a videotaped message for the energy officials of China, India and other countries in the Clean-Energy Ministerial, a global energy-leaders forum meant to push reductions in carbon emissions. With 2016 on pace to follow 2015 as the warmest years on record, however, don't think you've got a handle on it. Because you don't, California Gov. Jerry Brown warned the international political and business leaders and technology mavens.

US stock indexes waver between small gains and losses

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

U.S. stock indexes wavered between small gains and losses in afternoon trading Thursday as investors weighed the latest company earnings news and moves in oil markets. Energy companies were down after a meeting of OPEC ministers ended without an agreement on crude production cuts. Trading has been subdued as investors hold out for more clues as to whether the Federal Reserve will raise its key interest rate at the central bank's next meeting of policymakers later this month. Even with tomorrow's employment data coming out... Читать дальше...

Texas selfie statue surprisingly not a hit on social media

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) — While you might think a bronze statue immortalizing two girls taking a selfie would be met with approval on social media, that doesn't appear to be the case. The city of Sugar Land, Texas, says the statue recently installed in a city plaza is meant to depict a common activity in the area.

King Tut wielded a meteorite blade from the gods ... sort of

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Apparently making ornaments, jewelry and weapons out of the iron from meteorites was a big deal in the "from the late Neolithic period to the Bronze Age," researchers report. But the long iron blade found with Egyptian King Tutankhamun, or King Tut, has just now be proven to be of heavenly origins.

Advisers urge easier access to treatment for hearing loss

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hearing loss is a growing public health problem that can leave older adults socially isolated and even increase their risk for dementia — yet getting treated is a pricey hassle, declares a prestigious government advisory group that's calling for change. Allow some simple devices for mild hearing problems to be sold over the counter to people who can't afford or aren't ready to make the leap to full hearing aids. Most patients largely cover the costs out of pocket, as insurance... Читать дальше...

Review: 'Ninja Turtles' sequel is a cartoon on steroids

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Not that a live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" sequel owes anything at all to an adult audience, but in an age where comic books of every stripe are tailored to be must-sees for ages 8 to 80, it's a little disarming to find one hopeful franchise that is really and truly for kids. "Out of the Shadows" kicks off with Shredder (played this time by Brian Tee instead of Tohoru Masamune) breaking out of a police convoy, and effectively escaping the Turtles' nunchuck-wielding, manhole cover launching garbage truck/war machine. «Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The Louvre museum in Paris says it will be closed Friday to remove artworks from rooms threatened by rising water from the Seine River. Paris police, meanwhile, say their flood warning has been upgraded to "orange" level for areas in Paris near the Seine, which has overflowed its banks in many places.
