Google, Heart Association team up on new research venture

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

For the Google group, its latest biomedical venture will join projects that include whiz-bang devices such as driverless cars, contact lenses that monitor blood-sugar for diabetics and health-tracking wristbands. Progress has been slow and "we should shake it up a little bit," he said. Besides cash, Google has tech tools to offer such as sensors to monitor the health of "people in the wild" versus just when they go to doctors and huge capabilities for data analysis.

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The startup of about 400 employees has poached executive talent from Tesla and also draws its name from a luminary scientist — Michael Faraday — who helped harness for humanity the forces of nature. Even Faraday's public announcement that California, Georgia, Louisiana and Nevada... Читать дальше...

Dubai Airshow opens without big purchases by Gulf carriers

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The biennial Dubai Airshow opened its doors Sunday without any major purchasing deals announced, instead giving Arab Gulf carriers an opportunity to showcase the latest and newest aircraft in their fast-growing fleets. Ohio traffic-camera law takes enforcement to busy freeways

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CLEVELAND (AP) — A state law meant to effectively ban the use of traffic enforcement cameras is proving to have unintended consequences: motorists speeding along busy Ohio freeways getting a lot more tickets. [...] some communities have found a lucrative route around the rule by stationing officers with camera-equipped speed guns beside and above highways — rather than the local roadways where stationary cameras had been confined. About 200 tickets have been mailed since officers in the village... Читать дальше...

Young, idealistic farmers help keep land in production

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

A large concern is that the number of farmers past typical retirement age is growing faster than those under age 35, meaning the pipeline could be emptying faster than it's filling up. [...] there is broad anecdotal evidence that young farmers with an interest in growing healthy, local food are helping keep farmland in production. Merrigan, who now runs the sustainability program at George Washington University, said while there are many young people who want to get into farming, the hard part... Читать дальше...

A mosque grows slowly amid opposition in New Hampshire

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — The same financial difficulties that face houses of worship across the country have stalled a 10-year effort by New Hampshire's small Muslim community to construct their first mosque — and build a bridge to the non-Muslim neighbors who never wanted it there in the first place. A decade after the still-unfinished red brick structure began rising out of a stony hillside overlooking the Merrimack Valley, the Islamic Society of New Hampshire says it has raised about $2 million for the project... Federal aid to repair roads won't improve highway system

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Federal aid to repair roads won't improve highway system COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An influx of federal money to repair hundreds of roads and bridges damaged by last month's historic flooding will do little to improve South Carolina's dilapidated highway system. The DOT will get reimbursed for much of the work through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Highway Administration's emergency relief program. Some legislators were hoping the federal aid could help the state modernize... Читать дальше...

Shipyard to begin early negotiations with union

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The Navy shipbuilder told Machinists Union Local S6 that it wants to negotiate contract changes by year's end, instead of waiting until spring when the current labor contract expires, so it can shore up the framework for a labor pact to produce a competitive bid for Coast Guard off-shore patrol cutters in March. Workers feel like they're being forced to carry the load for concessions because of poor management decisions that have contributed to cost overruns and delays in several ships, including the stealthy, first-in-class Zumwalt. «Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

The James' new primary care doctor explained Lawrence's prostate cancer diagnosis and every procedure that followed until they understood each of them. The Comprehensive Care Program, funded with a $6.1 million federal grant, is an example of a new model of care aimed at changing the culture of America's health care system to one where doctors treat people rather than symptoms. Lynda Crandall, executive director of Pioneer Network, a nonprofit promoting a culture change in nursing homes, said some... Читать дальше...

Japan its own enemy in push to improve cybersecurity

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Even with the frequency and severity of cyberattacks booming worldwide, efforts by the world's No. 3 economic power to improve its data security are being hobbled by a widespread corporate culture that views security breaches as a loss of face, leading to poor disclosure of incidents or information sharing at critical moments, Japanese experts and government officials say. Improving cybersecurity practices has emerged as a top national priority for Japan, stung in recent years by embarrassing leaks at Sony Pictures... Читать дальше...

The Latest: UK warns of airport security overhaul

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

Britain's foreign secretary says airport security in many cities will need to be overhauled if it is confirmed the Russian plane crash in the Sinai was caused by a bomb planted by the Islamic State group or someone inspired by the militants. U.S. and British officials suspect the Oct. 31 flight from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg was brought down by a bomb on board, but Egypt warns it is too early to say what caused the crash. The British government and U.S. officials have said intelligence suggests the plane was downed by a bomb... Читать дальше...

«Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

CAIRO (AP) — The airport at Egypt's resort of Sharm el-Sheikh has long had gaps in security, including a key baggage scanning device that often is not functioning and lax searches at an entry gate for food and fuel for the planes, security officials at the airport told The Associated Press. Security at the airport, and others around Egypt, have become a central concern as investigators probe the Oct. 31 crash of a Russian plane 23 minutes after it left Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 on board.
