Designing roots to reach new depths could help carbon storage in soil

Sciencedaily.com

Scientists have discovered how to potentially design root systems to grow deeper by altering their angle growth to be steeper and reach the nutrients they need to grow, a discovery that could also help develop new ways to capture carbon in soil.

Wine-drinkers of the world rejoice! New research finds key to billion-dollar problem

Sciencedaily.com

Grapevine Trunk Diseases, or GTDs, are the bane of vineyard owners worldwide, and as of 2012, were responsible for more than $1.5 billion in annual economic damages. While researchers have long known that a host of pathogenic fungi combine to gang up on grapevines, the mechanics of how these GTD-causing fungi work has remained a mystery.

Extreme heat exposure worsens child malnutrition

Sciencedaily.com

Exposure to extreme heat increases both chronic and acute malnutrition among infants and young children in low-income countries -- threatening to reverse decades of progress, new research finds.

A new leap in understanding nickel oxide superconductors

Sciencedaily.com

Researchers discover that nickel oxide superconductors contain a phase of quantum matter, known as charge density waves, that's common in other unconventional superconductors. In other ways, though, they're surprisingly unique. Unconventional superconductors contain a mix of weird quantum states. Researchers found one of them -- frozen electron ripples known as charge density waves -- in a nickelate superconductor they discovered three years ago.

Alzheimer's researchers study drug efficacy in early stages of disease

Sciencedaily.com

Most drugs developed to treat Alzheimer's disease have for years been ineffective in clinical trials. Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine recently evaluated the efficacy of a failed clinical trial drug using their rigorous pipeline.

Using AI to train teams of robots to work together

Sciencedaily.com

Researchers have developed a method to train multiple agents such as robots or drones to work together using multi-agent reinforcement learning, a type of artificial intelligence.

SARS-CoV-2 hijacks nanotubes between neurons to infect them, study finds

Sciencedaily.com

Scientists have used state-of-the-art electron microscopy approaches to demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 hijacks nanotubes, tiny bridges that link infected cells with neurons. The virus is therefore able to penetrate neurons despite the fact that they are lacking the ACE2 receptor that the virus usually binds to when infecting cells.

The outer limits: Future economic growth in the face of diminishing resource

Sciencedaily.com

The 1972 book 'The Limits to Growth' shared a somber message for humanity: the Earth's resources are finite and probably cannot support current rates of economic and population growth to the end of the 21st century. Researchers believe that although no one can say with absolute certainty that the planet will reach an unavertable crisis by the end of this century, our current trajectory is unable to continue much longer.

For dairy farmers, where does the time go?

Sciencedaily.com

Globally, dairy producers face increasing challenges regarding sustainability, including declining numbers of workers in the agricultural sector, while continuing to meet increasing demand for nutritious and affordable food. Dairy systems must now focus on more sustainable production that reflects economic, environmental, and social goals. A new report explores labor time-use on Irish pasture-based dairy farms in the busy spring and summer seasons.

Hydrogen generated by Si-based agent attenuates inflammation in ulcerative colitis mouse model

Sciencedaily.com

Researchers designed a silicon-based agent that successfully generated hydrogen continuously in the mouse gastrointestinal tract in an ulcerative colitis (UC) model. The hydrogen served as an antioxidant that could eliminate the reactive oxygen species shown to induce the chronic inflammation responsible for the damage and symptoms caused by UC. Mice given the agent had reduced hemorrhage, inflammation, and hyperexcitability in the brain area associated with visceral pain and discomfort. These results... Читать дальше...

Arisaema urashima's 'fishing rod' reels in its primary pollinator

Sciencedaily.com

The distinctive-looking plant Arisaema urashima is a common sight in woodlands in Japan, with its long-thread like appendage that looks like a fishing rod and line. A research collaboration has now revealed the role played by this mysterious 'fishing rod'; it selectively reels in the primary pollinator, increasing the plant's reproductive success.

Study shows link between frequent naps and high blood pressure

Sciencedaily.com

Frequent or usual daytime napping in adults was associated with a 12% higher risk of developing high blood pressure and a 24% high risk of having a stroke compared to never napping. Experts say napping, though not unhealthy, may be a sign of poor sleep quality. A higher percentage of frequent nappers were men, had lower education and income levels, and reported cigarette smoking, daily drinking, insomnia, snoring and being an evening person compared to people who reported napping sometimes or never. Do fish suffer from oxygen starvation?

Sciencedaily.com

Larger fishes are more likely to experience oxygen deficiency in warming water than smaller species. The same applies to fish with large cells, note researchers. In addition, marine fishes are less tolerant of oxygen-depleted water than freshwater fishes. Based on these insights, the researchers ultimately aim to predict which aquatic species are at risk due to changes in their habitat caused by global warming and human activities.

When the invasive fish are native

Sciencedaily.com

Exotic fish are a threat to river ecosystems, but what happens when invasive species are native to a territory and have been introduced into waters that are not their original territory? A new study has analyzed the impact the native fish receive from these species, called translocated species, compared to the effects of exotic invasive species, i.e, those that are not native to any basin in the territory.

Researchers identify protein connected to aging and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Sciencedaily.com

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an aging-associated disease caused by progressive scarring of the lungs, leading to respiratory failure and death. Therapies to treat IPF are limited, making studies on the mechanisms responsible for this crippling disease a priority. Now researchers have discovered a new mechanism linking the aging of blood vessels to the development of pulmonary fibrosis.
