Russia isn’t buying any of this “revolution” nonsense. For the Kremlin this attempt is all too familiar to the Euromaidan revolution that overthrew the democratically elected government of Ukraine with a foreign backed replacement.

Before the fateful day of January 22, fewer than one in fiveVenezuelans had heard of Juan Guaidó. Only a few months ago, the 35-year-old was an obscure character in a politically marginal far-right group closely associated with gruesome acts of street violence. Even in his own party, Guaidó had been a mid-level figure in the opposition-dominated National Assembly, which is now held under contempt according to Venezuela’s constitution.

Last week President Trump announced that the United States would no longer recognize Nicholas Maduro as president of Venezuela and would recognize the head of its national assembly, Jose Guaido, as president instead. US thus openly backs regime change. But what has long been a dream of the neocons may well turn out to be a nightmare for President Trump.

Attempts to carry out a coup in Venezuela have been regularly made since the time of Hugo Chávez. The first one in 2002, when the predecessor of Maduro was opposed by a considerable part of the army and was arrested for two days by putschists, was the most productive one.

The much-awaited meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his visiting Turkish counterpart Recep Erdogan in Moscow last Wednesday focused on the the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. The timeframe of the US drawdown or its scope and directions remain far from clear. The 214 meter long tanker on Friday afternoon arrived in Murmansk after a 6-week voyage from Nansha, China. The new-built vessel on the 11th December left the Chinese Guangzhou Shipyard and set course towards the north. It was quickly joined by new LNG carrier «Boris Davydov», a ship constructed at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea.
