Chief of General Staff misses the Security Council meeting
“The Council members have discussed the matters on the domestic and foreign security agenda, as well as current challenges and ways to overcome them,” the government’s press service said in a statement.
Prime Minister’s Spokesperson Mane Gevorgyan has told the press that Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces Onik Gasparyan was notified about the meeting but did not attend it.
Following the meeting, the office of the Security Council has issued a statement, which reads:
“As the body setting the main policies in defense, the Security Council of Armenia strongly condemns all attempts to include the Armed Forces in political affairs.
The Constitution of Armenia clearly states that the Armed Forces must not interfere in political affairs and that the Armed Forces are under civilian control.
According to the law, the head of the government makes the decision on appointment and dismissal of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces as the person holding the highest rank in the military.
As the most important institution maintaining adherence to the Constitution, the President of Armenia must definitely exercise the corresponding approach.
Given the abovementioned facts, the Security Council calls on the President to fulfill the Prime Minister’s request and sign the decree on dismissal of the Chief of General Staff.”
