FDA warns five companies about health claims in products containing delta-8 THC
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said Wednesday it issued warning letters to ATLRx Inc., BioMD Plus LLC, Delta 8 Hemp, Kingdom Harvest LLC and M Six Labs to address potential violations in sales of products containing delta-8 THC. The companies have 15 working days to answer the warning in writing. "We're very concerned about the growing popularity of delta-8 THC products being sold online and in stores nationwide," FDA principal deputy commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said on Twitter. "These products often include claims that they treat or alleviate the side effects related to a wide variety of diseases or medical disorders." The FDA said any delta-THC product that claims to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevents diseases qualifies as an unapproved drug. As one of more than 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, delta-8 THC is typically derived from nationally legal hemp or from cannabis in states that allow it. It's showing up in gummies, chocolate, caramels, chewing gum, and peanut brittle and "has psychoactive and intoxicating effects and may be dangerous to consumers," the FDA said.
