U.S. stocks opened modestly lower on Tuesday as the stunning summer rally appeared set to pause after the S&P 500 closed at its highest level in three months a day earlier. The S&P 500 shed 3 points, or 0.1%, to 4,292. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 30 points, or 0.1%, to 33,958, as the blue-chip average was bolstered by strong earnings from Walmart Inc. . A total of 522 startups have laid of 70,698 employees in 2022, according to Layoffs.fyi, which tracks public reports. Among the more recent moves, Sema4 Holdings Corp. cut 250 positions on Monday, ContraFect Corp. dropped 16 positions, also on Monday. Peloton Interactive Inc. said Aug. 12 it would eliminate 780 jobs. Layoffs in the sector have been increasing all year, but the pace has gained in May, June and July, according to data from the website. American Airlines Group Inc. said Tuesday it has agreed to purchase 20 Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft, with an option to purchase up to 40 more. The aircraft is expected to carry passengers at twice the speed of today's fastest commercial planes. Overture is designed to carry 65 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7 over water, with a range of 4,250 nautical miles. U.S. housing starts and building-permit issuance declined in July

The slowing real estate market is leading more homebuyers to back out of deals, according to a new report from Redfin. Some 63,000 home-purchase agreements fell through in July, or about 16.1% of the homes that went under contract in the month, marking the highest percentage on record with the exception of March and April of 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was disrupting the market. Shares of Lumentum Holdings Inc. slumped 8.5% in premarket trading Tuesday, after the optical networking products company reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that beat expectations but provided a downbeat profit outlook for the current quarter. Net income for the quarter to July 2 rose to $34.7 million, or 49 cents a share, from $21.5 million, or 28 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
