U.S. stocks post modest gains early Monday on heels of 2022’s strongest week

Stocks opened slightly higher Monday as investors looked ahead to another busy week of earnings and closely watched inflation data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 47 points, or 0.1%, to 35,137, while the S&P 500 gained 0.1% to 4,505. The Nasdaq Composite was up 0.3% at 14,133. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq on Friday posted their strongest weekly gains since the week ended Dec. 23.

Tesla Inc. disclosed that it has been subpoenaed by the Securities in Exchange Commission to see if the electric vehicle maker is in compliance with a settlement over its governance processes. The stock rose 0.7% in premarket trading. In Tesla's 2021 10-K annual report filed with the SEC late Friday, the company said the subpoena was issued on Nov. 16, 2021, and was related to the SEC investigation into then Chief Executive Elon Musk's tweet in 2018 that he had "funding secured" to take the company private. Bank of America Corp. CEO Brian T. Moynihan received a 31% boost in pay to $32 million in 2022, up from $24.5 million in the prior year, according to a Friday filing. Moynihan's base pay remained at $1.5 million, with an additional $30.5 million in equity incentive awards. Newell Brands Inc. announced Monday that it has sold its connected home and security business to Resideo Technologies, Inc., a connected home company that specializes in products like thermostats, humidifiers and security systems. Newell's connected home and security business includes the First Alert and BRK brands. Gross proceeds from the deal are expected to be $593 million. Tesla Inc. disclosed that the fair market value of the bitcoin it held was $1.99 billion as of Dec. 31, 2021. Tesla Inc. hired 28,533 employees in 2021, to boost its workforce by 40.3%, according to the electric vehicle maker's annual report. In a 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission late Friday, Tesla said as of Dec. 31, 2021, the number of full-time employees it and its subsidiaries had worldwide was 99,290, which compares with 70,757 at the end of 2020. Tyson Foods Inc. shares jumped 5.4% in Monday premarket trading after the meat processor reported first-quarter profit that far exceeded Street expectations. Net income totaled $1.12 billion, or $3.07 per share, up from $467 million, or $1.28 per share, last year. Adjusted EPS of $2.87 blew past the FactSet consensus for $1.93. Spirit Airlines Inc. and Frontier Group Holdings Inc. said Monday they have agreed to merge in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $6.6 billion including net debt and operating lease liabilities. Harley-Davidson Inc. declared Monday a new quarterly dividend of 15.75 cents a share, up 5% from the previous dividend of 15 cents a share. The motorcycle maker's new dividend will be payable March 18 to shareholder of record on Feb. 28.
