U.S. business inventories jumped 1.2% in November, the government said Friday. Sales rose 0.7% in the month. An increase in inventories adds to gross domestic product and is usually a sign of an expanding economy. The ratio of inventories to sales, meanwhile, rose to 1.25 from 1.24. U.S. consumer sentiment in January near lowest level of past decade

Shares of Sirius XM Holdings Inc. slid 3.8% toward a six-week low in morning trading Friday, after J.P. Morgan analyst Sebastiano Petti turned bullish on the satellite radio company, amid continued weakness in U.S. auto sales as semiconductor shortages and supply chain issues crimp supply. The stock is on track to snap a six-day win streak, which would be the longest such streak in 10 months. U.S. stocks opened lower Friday, under pressure after a much weaker-than-expected reading on December retail sales and earnings from major banks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 400 points, or 1.1%, to 35,714, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.8% to 4,624. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.5% at 14,739. U.S. import prices slid 0.2% in December to mark the first decline in five months, largely because the cost of oil fell. Excluding fuel, import prices rose 0.5% in December. Import prices rose 10.4% in 2021 and contributed to the biggest increase in U.S. inflation in almost 40 years. Prices started to level off toward the end of the year, however.

Shares of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. were the worst premarket performer of the Dow Jones Industrial Average's components, as they dropped 4.3% following disappointing fourth-quarter results. The implied price decline would shave about 47 points off the Dow's price, while Dow futures slumped 249 points, or 0.7%, ahead of the open. If JPMorgan's stock closes down 4.3%, it would be the biggest one-day post-earnings selloff since it sank 4.8% on Oct. 13, 2011.

U.S. retail sales sank 1.9% in December

Shares of BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings Inc. dove 5.2% toward a two-month low in premarket trading Friday, after J.P. Morgan analyst Christopher Horvers swung to bearish from bullish on the membership-based warehouse retailer, following their sizable outperformance the past two years. Horvers cut this rating to underweight from overweight and cut his stock price target to $60 from $78. The new price target implies 7.5% downside from Thursday's closing price. Citigroup Inc. said Friday its fourth-quarter net income fell to $3.17 billion, or $1.46 a share, from $4.3 billion, or $1.92 a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue increased to $17 billion from $16.8 billion. The New York-based bank beat the Wall Street targets of $1.39 in earnings on revenue of $16.85 billion, according to a survey by FactSet.
