20 years after US Iraq invasion, Senate acts to end war authorization

France24.com (en)

In a procedural vote that came over a decade after the war's official end, senators from both parties strongly supported cancelling the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which empowered Bush to send US forces to Iraq. The same bill also revokes the 1991 AUMF that empowered Bush's father president George HW Bush to attack Iraq after Saddam's forces invaded Kuwait. "The Iraq War has itself long been over. This AUMF has outlived its purpose and we can no longer justify keeping... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan granted an interview to FRANCE 24 from Lahore. Earlier this week, police came to arrest him at his home for not appearing in court over a corruption case, a move that sparked clashes with his supporters. "They are scared of the coming elections on April 30 and they wanted me in jail before that," Khan told FRANCE 24, adding that he would attend a court hearing on March 18. "No political leader has ever suffered this sort of attack," he added.

France24.com (en)

The French far-right opposition said Thursday it is to file a motion of no-confidence in the government in parliament after the adoption of a controversial pension reform without a vote in the lower house. The decision is a "total failure" for President Emmanuel Macron and his Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne "cannot stay" in her post, said Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate in 2022 presidential elections and who now leads National Rally (RN) deputies in parliament.

Rome's Pantheon to charge for tourist entry

France24.com (en)

The price for entry, which is currently free, has yet to be fixed but would not exceed five euros ($5), while minors and Rome residents would be exempt. The change was "based on common sense", Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said, and the price "modest" for Italy's most visited cultural site. The 2,000-year-old building is currently a consecrated church and part of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the diocese of Rome. Most of the money -- 70 percent -- will go to the culture ministry... Читать дальше...

The men were celebrating their party’s victory in student elections held at the city’s polytechnic university. However, this celebratory gunfire, a common occurrence during celebrations in the Middle East, hit a transformer, causing it to explode. Our Observer says the result could have been catastrophic.

France24.com (en)

Gibson-Park had missed the first three matches due to injury but he gets the nod ahead of veteran Conor Murray as he looked sharp when he came on for the second-half of last Sunday's win over Scotland. Gibson-Park had in any case replaced Murray as number one prior to the Six Nations although the latter has impressed. The New Zealand-born player teams up with his Leinster team-mate and Irish skipper Johnny Sexton, who will be making his 60th and final Six Nations appearance. The 37-year-old will... France24.com (en)

The consecutive bank failures are the sector's biggest casualties since the 2008 financial crisis, prompting US authorities to quickly step in to protect depositors. Amid contagion fears, the US Federal Reserve also announced it would make extra funding available to banks to help them meet the needs of depositors, which would include withdrawals. "This week's actions demonstrate our resolute commitment to ensure that our financial system remains strong, and that depositors' savings remain safe," Yellen told the Senate Finance Committee. Battle for Bakhmut highlights divide between Wagner mercenary chief and the Kremlin

France24.com (en)

The founder and leader of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been touted as someone who could pose a political challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Once a key battlefield ally, in recent days Prigozhin has publicly lamented losing his direct line to the Kremlin. Wagner fighters are not being supplied with enough ammunition to win the battle for Bakhmut despite his numerous appeals, in what may be a sign of a struggle for influence in Moscow – and, notably, at Russia’s ministry of defence.

France24.com (en)

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday decided to trigger Article 49.3 of the French constitution, which granted the government executive privilege to push through controversial pension reforms without a parliamentary vote. The move gives the opposition the right to immediately call a confidence vote and risks further inflaming the protest movement after months of demonstrations.

Paris fire exposes hidden iron holding up Notre-Dame

France24.com (en)

It took near destruction and a massive restoration project which is still in progress for a team of archaeologists to discover the iron reinforcements. The construction of the famous cathedral in the heart of the French capital began in 1160 and was not completed until almost a century later. It was the tallest building of its time, with vaults reaching up to 32 metres (105 feet), according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE on Wednesday. Maxime L'Heritier, an archaeologist at University Paris 8 and the study's lead author... Читать дальше...

Camavinga 'graduates' in mature Real Madrid European triumph

France24.com (en)

The 20-year-old has not held down a starting spot in midfield for Madrid since his arrival from Rennes in 2021, but this was his strongest case yet. Camavinga was a strong backboard for Madrid's pass masters Luka Modric and Toni Kroos to play from -- and the Frenchman proved as adroit as the team's elder statesmen on the ball too. His French compatriot Aurelien Tchouameni has been Carlo Ancelotti's regular pick in the holding role once occupied by Casemiro, but Camavinga showed his quality in the 1-0 last 16, second leg win over Liverpool. Wales No.8 Faletau to win 100th cap against France

France24.com (en)

There is also a return for speedster Louis Rees-Zammit, who will make his third start for Wales at full-back, and a recall for Toulon fly-half Dan Biggar. Faletau, who made his debut against the Barbarians in June 2011, "has been a fantastic servant for Welsh rugby", Gatland said. "Even though he's reaching 100 caps he's still pretty quiet, but he's incredibly well respected by the players for what he's achieved," he added. "I remember in the early years he was just a constant and he became absolutely... Читать дальше...
