RES4Africa releases latest study findings

ACSA to invest nearly R22bn in airport infrastructure over the next five years

NCPC-SA launches circularity programme in North West

South African economy averts recession as mining sector rebounds

South Africa’s economy escaped a technical recession in the fourth quarter as fewer rotational power cuts helped energy-intensive industries including mining and manufacturing rebound. Gross domestic product expanded 0.1% in the three months through December, compared with a contraction of 0.2% in the prior quarter, Statistics South Africa said in a report released in the capital, Pretoria, on Tuesday. That undershot the 0.2% median estimate of 12 economists in a Bloomberg survey.

Gauteng’s R500bn budget focuses on crime, township economy boom

Gauteng’s Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo on Tuesday tabled a provincial budget for Gauteng of R165.8-billion for the 2024/25 financial year, with a focus on fighting crime and boosting the township economy. This will increase to R171.5-billion in 2025/26 and to R176.8-billion in 2026/27, equating to the injection of R514.1-billion over the next three years into Gauteng’s economy.

Eskom says it is on track for permanent repair of Kusile stack by Dec

Business activity picks up in February, PMI survey shows

South African private sector activity expanded in February for the first time in six months as staffing and purchasing levels increased amid stronger confidence, a survey showed on Tuesday. Africa to be $2.5tr short of climate finance by 2030, UN says

Africa will be $2.5-trillion short of the finance it needs to cope with climate change by 2030, a UN official said on Monday, adding that the continent has contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions while seeing some of the worst impacts. Africa attracts only 2% of global investments in clean energy but needs $2.8-trillion of investment in the sector by 2030, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa chief economist Hanan Morsy told a conference in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, warning against the consequences of under-funding.

DWS, DFFE suggest short-, long-term invasive plant interventions

A joint task team established by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) have identified immediate short- and long-term interventions with clear outcomes to manage the clearing of alien invasive plants at the Vaal river. Last month, Rand Water started an integrated programme, including physical removal, chemical control and biological control, to clear the water lettuce currently overwhelming the Vaal Barrage.
