City roads and stormwater agency the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) says the partial closure of the Modderfontein road bridge, between Pretoria road (West) and Wordsworth road, will remain in place until the completion of the rehabilitation works on the northern carriageway, with the southern carriageway open to accommodate counterflow traffic. The rehabilitation project is being undertaken in two phases to reduce the impact to traffic. The first phase remedial works on the southern carriageway were completed in July 2023.

Low-voltage battery solutions manufacturer Clarios and sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery technology developer Altris have partnered to develop low-voltage Na-ion batteries for the automotive industry. The development of Na-ion batteries has been steadily gaining traction in an effort to produce energy storage solutions that do not require costly and sometimes rare materials, such as cobalt and lithium.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reports that government plans to establish an independent transmission project office, located either at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) or the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), to procure new transmission capacity using a build, operate and transfer (BOT) model. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) will impose antidumping duties on windscreens imported from China, to be used in the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) area as replacement glass in the aftermarket. The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac) initiated an investigation into the dumping of these windscreens starting mid-2022.

The twenty-seventh George Old Car Show will be held at Eden Technical High School, in Union street, George, on February 10 and 11, with more than 1 000 classical cars expected. President Cyril Ramaphosa has axed disgraced economist Thabi Leoka from his Presidential Economic Advisory Council. "On Monday, 22 January 2024, the Presidency communicated to Ms Leoka the immediate termination of her membership in the Presidential Economic Advisory Council," said Ramaphosa's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac) has created a rebate facility for the import of optic fibre cables and electrical apparatus used in international submarine optic fibre cable infrastructure. This followed Telkom subsidiary Openserve’s 2019 application for the products classified under tariff subheadings 8544.70 and 8536.90.90, respectively.

The revival of copper mining in South Africa’s prospective Northern Cape province on Tuesday received yet another promising forward nudge along the road to copper-revival in the form of development obstacles being moved out of the way Orion Minerals. Seafood and aquaculture company Sea Harvest aims to acquire 100% of investment group Terrasan’s subsidiaries engaged in the catching, processing and sale of pelagic fish, and 63.07% of Terrasan’s subsidiaries engaged in the farming, processing and sale of abalone for an initial amount of R965-million, to be settled in shares and cash. As a part of the transaction, Sea Harvest will acquire Terrasan’s vertically integrated pelagic fish business, West Point Fishing, which is based in St Helena Bay, in the Western Cape.
