How the CEO of Bulletproof Coffee turned buttered coffee into a multimillion-dollar empire

While on a remote mountainside in Tibet, Dave Asprey started to feel "really, really crappy."

In the mid-2000s, the cloud computing executive-turned-biohacking guru trekked to Mount Kailash, considered one of the most sacred places on Earth, because he wanted to learn to meditate from the Buddhist pilgrims who take ritual walks around the base. Temperatures dipped 10 degrees below, freezing his CamelBak. The altitude left him in a brain fog. Читать дальше...

Trump is playing a dangerous game of chicken with Democrats that could cause healthcare costs to skyrocket

BusinessInsider.com

Win McNamee/Getty Images

In interviews over the past week, President Donald Trump has cast doubt on whether or not his administration will fund a key provision of the Affordable Care Act that helps offset costs for insurers.

The uncertainty Trump is sowing over the payments — known as cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments — has left insurers jittery and contemplating leaving the individual insurance exchanges created by the law known as Obamacare.

Trump has put CSR payments... Читать дальше...

The Chevy SS is a dinosaur — but it shouldn't go extinct (GM)

BusinessInsider.com

Technology is changing the way we drive.

This is a story we're told seemingly every day. The main characters are Tesla, Uber, Lyft, and lately, even the major automakers, who are pushing the envelope on electric cars and autonomous vehicles. The plot goes like this: In a few decades, driving a car will be to the 21st century what riding a horse was the 20th.

It's a compelling narrative. But then again, there are still some people who want to ride horses.

We talked to one of the most senior women on Wall Street about big deals, investment mistakes, and career advice (CG)

Carlyle

Private equity has come a long way.

What is now a $2.5 trillion industry managing money on behalf of public pensions and the like started as a hodgepodge of so-called leveraged buyout firms, popularized in the 1980s. Some historians would quibble and say the industry's origins date back much further, though not in any stance like today.

Business Insider recently sat down with Sandra Horbach, the cohead of US buyouts at the $158 billion Carlyle Group, to get a sense of how the industry has changed. Читать дальше...

Here's how much your rent goes up when your apartment building has amenities

BusinessInsider.com

Capture Light/Shutterstock.com

(Priceonomics) — Many details about an apartment can impact monthly rent, other than the amount of space and location. For example, units that seem similar could be priced differently if one has a balcony. This price differential could be even greater in newer luxury apartments which offer things like concierge service, furnished rooftops, and fitness centers.

So what kinds of features could increase your rent? And by how much? Using thousands of apartment... Читать дальше...

A former comedy scout explains how to tell a good story at a party

BusinessInsider.com

Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP

We’ve all been there: painfully, yet politely, sitting through someone telling a mediocre story at a party, screaming internally, “Get to the point!”

If only they could hear themselves drone on. It’s like watching an amateur comedian bomb onstage.

When I was a comedy scout in New York, I got to see plenty of this public masochism, and learned more about storytelling from people who bombed than people who killed.

The great comics make it look easy, hiding the mechanics of the craft. Читать дальше...

Scientists are trying to redesign the sugar molecule to make it healthier

BusinessInsider.com

missmeng/Flickr

Sugar is undergoing a makeover in food labs as the not-so-sweet science increasingly shows eating too much sugar can pose serious health risks, from diabetes to heart disease. Sugar is already prevalent in foods ranging from cereal and spaghetti sauce to soda and sweets.

A redesign of sugar involves tinkering with the shape of sugar molecules to deliver the same sweetness but with a lower amount of actual sugar. Nestlé is one of the few companies that has publicly... Читать дальше...

Turkey's President Erdogan declares victory in vote making him all-powerful — but the opposition says it will contest the result

BusinessInsider.com

AP Photo/Visar Kryeziu

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Votes for constitutional change to hand President Tayyip Erdogan sweeping powers held a narrow lead with almost all ballot boxes opened on Sunday, but Turkey's three largest cities and the mainly Kurdish southeast looked set to vote "No".

"Yes" votes stood at 51.3 percent after 98.2 percent of ballots had been opened for counting, state-run Anadolu news agency said, though a lag between opening and counting them could see the lead tighten further in the final stages. Читать дальше...

17 habits science shows will help you fall asleep faster and sleep better

BusinessInsider.com

Sleep is hard, especially in a world where people spend their time busy and stressed.

But not sleeping, in addition to making you less efficient and more stressed, is terrible for your health.

Americans currently average 6.8 hours of sleep per night, down an hour from 1942. Four in 10 Americans don't even get the minimum of seven hours of sleep doctors recommend. That's a public health emergency. Fatigue leads to short and long term problems with mental and physical health. Читать дальше...

Inside the ‘Doomsday Vault,’ a backup plan to save the world’s most vital food

BusinessInsider.com

John McConnico/AP

Imagine that the unthinkable has happened.

A massive asteroid impact triggers a “nuclear winter” effect, or one of the world’s most dangerous supervolcanoes erupts. Maybe Donald Trump gets in an epic Twitter feud with Kim Jong-Un that initiates World War 3.

Either way, things are going sideways, and the fate of human civilization itself is at stake. Will everything be lost?

It's been a rough week for United Airlines.

That deluge didn't let up on Sunday, when KHOU reported that a couple had been kicked off their United flight as they were headed from Houston to Costa Rica for their wedding.

Michael Hohl and Amber Maxwell had allegedly boarded their flight on Saturday and were about to take their seats when they said they saw a passenger napping across the row they were assigned to.

Hohl said that instead of waking up the man who was sleeping... Читать дальше...

Snapchat is doing damage control after its CEO allegedly said the app is 'only for rich people' (SNAP)

BusinessInsider.com

Youtube/Snapchat

Snapchat maker Snap Inc. is denying that its CEO, Evan Spiegel, once said the app is "only for rich people" and that he doesn't "want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain."

The quote, which Snap is calling "ridiculous," came from a recently unredacted court complaint by Anthony Pompliano, who served as the company's growth lead for a few weeks in 2015. In the complaint, Pompliano recounts the exchange from a September 2015 meeting he had with Spiegel about the app's international growth plans. Читать дальше...

How Oregon predicted Trump's partisan politics more than a decade ago

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

The white working class surprised many pundits and social scientists by supporting Donald Trump, leading some to describe the election results as a "whitelash."

The fact that the president-elect successfully mobilized this population was far from inevitable. After all, a fair number of Trump supporters once voted for Obama.

A good many of them, when questioned, explained that they "didn’t really like either candidate," or that they "wanted a change." History... Читать дальше...

I retired at 52 with a $3 million net worth — here are 10 things that surprised me about early retirement

Please welcome today, a good blogging bud of mine, ESI from ESIMoney.com. He recently retired at 52 and gained a whole new appreciation for what life has to offer.

And spoiler alert: it doesn't involve money or a high-powered career! Both of which he retired from once he realized enough was enough (his "enough," btw? $3 million) Take it away, ESI!

When I retired last fall at 52, I thought I knew exactly what retirement would be like. Many of the expectations I had did come true... Читать дальше...

National security adviser H.R. McMaster: It's time for the US to get tough with Russia

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House national security adviser H. R. McMaster said on Sunday it was time for tough talks with Russia over its support for Syria's government and its "subversive" actions in Europe.

Speaking on ABC News' "This Week" program, McMaster said Russia's backing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government has perpetuated a civil war and created a crisis that has bled over into Iraq, neighboring countries and Europe.

"So Russia's support for that kind of horrible regime... Читать дальше...

Why the final season of 'Girls' is a heartbreaking must-watch

BusinessInsider.com

Mark Schafer/HBO

I'm under no illusion that I can easily convince someone who has never watched "Girls" to tune in now that the HBO show is about to air its series finale on Sunday.

But I know the show has lost some viewers over the years — and I get why — and this is my appeal to those viewers to come back on board for season six.

Every season, I approach "Girls" having prepared myself to be annoyed by Hannah (Lena Dunham) and her similarly self-obsessed friends. There's clueless Marnie (Allison Williams)... Читать дальше...
