Chief Justice John Roberts faces his absolute worst nightmare

BusinessInsider.com

The chief justice of the United States did not look particularly peppy when he trundled onto the bench on Tuesday.

There are, of course, many reasons why John Roberts might have looked bleary-eyed and drained on that freezing morning.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that the chief was disquieted by the fact that his court had just agreed to hear a legal challenge to the Obama administration’s immigration executive actions—a case that, in many ways, constitutes Roberts’ absolute worst nightmare.

One of America's most respected former military officials is worried about the 2016 presidential field

BusinessInsider.com

Graham Flanagan/Business Insider

Robert Gates hesitated, considering the once out-of-this-world possibility that has become more and more plausible lately.

"Could you imagine a President Donald Trump?" he was asked.

"In all honesty, that's difficult for me," he told Business Insider in an interview earlier this week.

In fact, the entire 2016 presidential field seems to be confounding Gates, one of the most-respected military officials in modern US history.

But the actor couldn't escape talking about the controversy surrounding this year's Oscar nominations and its lack of diversity.

Britain: Banks need to do more to prevent cyber attacks

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's banks need to dedicate far greater resources toward securing their IT infrastructure and should have a designated board member overseeing the issue, a senior lawmaker said, following a string of high-profile technology failures.

Andrew Tyrie, chairman of parliament's Treasury Committee, also suggested that Andrew Bailey, the deputy governor of the Bank of England who heads its banks supervisory arm, should be tasked with ensuring the banks develop more resilience. Читать дальше...

Loads of Americans are moving out of these 18 states

BusinessInsider.com

Rick Wilking/Reuters

People move for many different reasons. For instance, some get new jobs, others retire, and some just want to be closer to their families.

While many people in the US move within the same state — the Census Bureau estimated in 2011 that 40% of moves are within 50 miles — there are patterns for those who did make interstate moves, according to Atlas Van Lines, a national moving company.

Atlas looked at 77,705 interstate moves and found that 18 states had more people moving out than in... Читать дальше...

China is building malls of the future that could come to the US soon

BusinessInsider.com

Marina Nazario/Business Insider

As the mall as we know it declines across America, a new era of shopping is emerging on the horizon.

High-end, futuristic malls in China and parts of the US are upgrading technology, hoping to attract customers with “smart” shopping centers.

“In the US, the malls look exactly the same they did 20 year ago,” Deborah Weinswig, executive director at Fung Business Intelligence Centre, said recently in a talk at a JDA Executive Luncheon. “We’ve got to make it more exciting... Читать дальше...

There's actually a lot of snow in New York!

BusinessInsider.com

Henry Blodget, Business Insider

Last year, there was supposed to be a huge blizzard in New York.

The media hyperventilated for days, and the forecasts got so dire that New York's nanny-ish mayor closed the entire city before a single flake had fallen.

Of course, the forecasts proved overblown, and we got a pathetic six inches. So New York businesses lost billions of dollars-worth of revenue and productivity for nothing.

This year, thankfully, the predicted "snowmageddon" hit on a Saturday... Читать дальше...

New York City is getting walloped with snow — and that's making a select few skiers and snowboarders happy.

Winter storm Jonas unloaded over 16 inches of snow in the city as of 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to The Weather Channel.

Forecasters expect the storm to dump over 25 inches of snow before it dissipates during the early-morning hours on Sunday, Reuters reports.

The blizzard is expected to be one of the top-five worst ever to hit New York since record-keeping began in 1869... Читать дальше...

Earlier in the day, Trump declared on Twitter that Kelly had a "conflict of interest,"... Читать дальше...

Just in 2015, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander played a famous painter, a secret agent, and an artificial intelligence that wants to be human.

It's been quite a year for the 27-year-old, and it might all end with her receiving an Oscar for her nominated role in "The Danish Girl."

Playing artist Gerda Wegener in the film, Vikander gives a scene-stealing performance as the wife of fellow artist Lili Elbe (played by Eddie Redmayne), one of the first identifiable recipients of sex-reassignment surgery. Читать дальше...

2015 was the hottest year in recorded history — here are the photos to prove it

BusinessInsider.com

2015 was the hottest year in recorded history. By far.

For some, warmer temps offered a welcome chance to bask in the sun.

But the weather weirding also brought devastation in human lives and livehoods through droughts, fires, and deadly heat waves across the globe.

In 2015 the surface temperature of the Earth was about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average global temperature of the entire 20th century.

Here are moments captured by Reuters photographers throughout the year... Читать дальше...

The grocery chain is expanding organic-food brands, removing some artificial ingredients from its products, and adding more gluten-free items in hopes of attracting more health-conscious shoppers.

Aldi became one of the world's biggest food retailers by offering insanely low prices.

The chain's prices on fresh produce and packaged goods are roughly 30% lower than Walmart's, according to a recent price check. Читать дальше...

Yes you can eat snow — just make sure it's fresh

Some fluffy white stuff is hitting the East Coast this week, creating the perfect opportunity to catch snowflakes on your tongue.

"Everyone should eat snow because it's really fun," says Anne Nolin, a professor at the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. Her one condition: "You have to do it with a goofy look on your face."

Nolin, who studies snow and ice in the climate system, says most snow is just as clean as any drinking water. Читать дальше...
