Atiku issues this strong warning to Oyegun – Newspaper Review

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned Oyegun about his behavior at the Ondo primaries. The Edo gubernatorial elections witnessed a massive turnout as PDP and APC battled it out for the governor’s seat in Edo state. As the election results are being collated, other political controversies are springing up all over.

Below is a review of the latest newspaper headlines:

The Nation

According to The Nation,  Israel’s ex- prime minister, Shimon Peres, has died at the age of 93. Peres served twice as Israel’s PM and once as president in a glittering political career. He suffered a stroke two weeks ago.

His condition had improved before a sudden deterioration on Tuesday, the BBC reports. His son Chemi led tributes to “one of the founding fathers of Israel” who “worked tirelessly” for it.

Several world figures including United States President, Barack Obama, Prince Charles and Pope Francis, are expected to attend Mr. Peres funeral in Jerusalem on Friday.

The Guardian

The Guardian reports that the residents of Edo state yesterday went to the polls to elect a new governor. The election which began at 8:30 a.m. witnessed a massive turnout of voters .

Materials arrived early at most polling units across the state. In Auchi, Etsako West local government, voting commenced early. At Izaiure, the home town of the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Philip Shaibu, there was a large turnout of voters. They voted immediately after their accreditation.

‎Shaibu who voted at exactly 9:23 a.m. commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring a smooth election.

‎”The machine seems to be working well. My expectation is that the people will vote for the continuity of progress and infrastructural development that APC is delivering in Edo State,” he said.

Some voters who spoke on the election described it as one of the most peaceful ever held in the state. ‎However, there was an earlier problem of the card readers not working well, but it was quickly addressed by the electoral officers.

This Day

This Day reports that the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Wednesday agreed to cut its oil output for the first time since 2008, with Saudi Arabia softening its stance on arch-rival Iran amid mounting pressure from low oil prices.

According to reports, two sources in OPEC said the group would reduce output to 32.5 million barrels per day (mbpd) from current production of 33.24mbpd.

How much each country will produce is to be decided at the next formal meeting of OPEC in November, when an invitation to join cuts could also be extended to non-OPEC countries such as Russia, sources said.

Responding to the news, oil prices jumped more than five per cent to trade above $48 per barrel after the outcome of OPEC’s informal meeting in Algeria took traders by surprise.

Still, many said they wanted to see the details of the deal. “We don’t know yet who is going to produce what. I want to hear from the mouth of the Iranian oil minister that he is not going to go back to pre-sanction levels.

“For the Saudis, it just goes against the conventional wisdom of what they’ve been saying,” said Jeff Quigley, director of energy markets at Houston-based Stratas Advisors.

In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja, the former vice president said the leadership of the party could not make rules only to discard it while the game is in progress.

“It is imperative for the national leadership of the party to live by the rules of internal democracy and respect for democratic consensus. You cannot break your own rules without creating problems,” he said.

Daily Trust

Daily Trust reports that the House of Representatives yesterday suspended its former chairman of the appropriation committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin, for one year over breaches of privileges of the 360 members of the House.

The decision was taken after the adoption of the report of the ethics and privileges committee which probed the matter for one week.

The committee headed by Rep Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) made four recommendations to the House, one of which was that Jibrin be reprimanded and suspended for 180 legislative sitting days in the first instance in line with Chapter 9 (1) of the Code of Conduct for members of the House.

The panel recommended further Jibrin was required to tender a formal written apology to the House, prior to his future resumption of duties.
