Wenger rebuffed the FA’s advances in the summer following Roy Hodgson’s dismissal, but Wembley chiefs are ready to make another beeline for him as they look to appoint a successor for disgraced Sam Allardyce.
Gareth Southgate has been placed in interim charge for the next four games, which takes England up to November 15 when they face Spain in a prestige friendly at Wembley.
It is understood the former England central defender will be considered by key decision-makers Martin Glenn, Dan Ashworth and David Gill as a long-term successor to Allardyce if he impresses in the role. But there is still a significant swell of support for Wenger at the FA.
Wenger rejected their advances in the summer because he still had 12 months to run on his Arsenal contract. But the timing of Allardyce’s unexpected departure may mean the Frenchman is more likely to give serious consideration to taking the England job at the end of the season.
