Ange Postecoglou has remarked that Tottenham Hotspur are more than just one or two top signings away from being able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool this season.
It is fair to say that Postecoglou’s project at Spurs is ahead of schedule, with fans and pundits widely expecting this season to be a transitional one.
However, given the quality of some of the football that Tottenham have played, particularly at the start of the campaign, some expectations among the fan base were re-set, which is perhaps why there has been some frustration at some of the recent results.
Postecoglou has now pointed out that Tottenham are still quite a distance away from where they want to be and remains a work in progress.
The Spurs head coach told Football.London: “We’ve got a lot of work to do still on the squad and I don’t think we’re anywhere near where we want to be. It probably will take a little bit more than three windows to get there, for sure.
“Just in terms of the robustness, adaptability and compatibility of the squad, I think there’s still a fair bit of change we need to do.
“I certainly don’t think we’re one or two players away from getting to where I want us to be, nowhere near it. Some of that will be natural evolution. Some of it hopefully means we continue to get the improvement we’ve had this year from some of our players. If that happens over the next 12 months, then yeah we’ll be in a great position.”

Postecoglou says Spurs are still on the rise
The Australian reminded everyone that quite a few players in the Spurs squad are still coming to terms with the Premier League and suggested that they will only get better over the next year or two.
He continued: “But you’ve got to remember, a lot of our group are in their first year of the Premier League. A good chunk of them have been ever-present, we need them to keep improving at the rate they are. We’ve still got a lot of work to do with the squad. I think we’re a long way away from being one or two players away from getting where we want to.”
When asked how many new players Spurs need to sign next summer, the 58-year-old responded: “A little bit of that depends on availability of players, suitability of players. There could be more activity, there could be less activity, but again, what we want to do is make sure we bring in the right ones.
“Maybe we do only bring in one or two, I don’t know, but that will only be because we think there are only one or two that are suitable for what we’re looking for, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be where I want us to be.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that we will need a much bigger squad next season, given that we will also be back in Europe. We have seen that Postecoglou’s high-intensity approach leads to quite a few injuries, which is why the Spurs boss would want a quality backup for every position.
