New Girl's Schmidt was a hilarious character but he also went through a lot on the show. He had many terrible things happen to him.
When looking back at New Girl, it is rather apparent that Schmidt was easily one of the most popular characters. This was due to the fact that he not only was quite hilarious, but he also was rather complex. He was able to maintain his love from fans, even during his most unlikeable moments in the series. His story was also easily one of the most eventful and intriguing out of the main characters.
This was made evident by the fact that he faced a ton of conflict that truly shaped how his character would develop. One could argue that he had the most drastic character progression out of the bunch, as he went from an insecure bro type to somebody who became his true, yet strange self. Although he would truly get his happy ending, as he married Cece, had Ruth, and became even closer with his friends, the road there was extremely difficult for him.
10 Constant Bullying For Being Overweight
Schmidt spent a significant amount of his life overweight, and it left a massive impact on his overall confidence. Sure, at times he certainly seemed cocky, but there was an immense amount of insecurity because of how often he was bullied.
Viewers were able to see this firsthand when his "friend," Benjamin, visited and still mocked him for being overweight growing up. It just seemed as if Schmidt was never able to completely run away from his past because of this.
9 Nadia Broke His Penis
When Nadia broke Schmidt's penis, it was challenging for him naturally. He was understandably in a large amount of pain and was not shy to express that to his fellow loft members.
This easily was one of the worst things that happened to him in the series. However, it would somewhat lead to him to end up with Cece for the first time, as she expressed her feelings to him while he was in the hospital. It was certainly a consolation prize for this very significant injury.
8 Nick Rejected His Cookie
Schmidt was devastated when Nick rejected a cookie he bought him. It was certainly a nice gesture from him, as it was his way of saying that he often thought about Nick while away from him. Nick, however, was mean and told him he did not do the same.
This was heartbreaking for Schmidt, as Nick was his best friend and he even cried because of it. Although this conflict would be resolved later on in the episode, there was no question that this was one of the hardest moments Schmidt faced in the series. He felt underappreciated as a friend.
7 His Father Abandoned Him
Schmidt's father left him when he was a child, and it was extremely hard for him to cope with. This certainly made sense, as it would be the case for anybody else in this situation. His feelings about this only intensified when his father returned.
Schmidt always had a glimmer of hope that his dad would come around, but he often was not there for him even later on in life. However, he did participate in Schmidt's eventual wedding, so there was a bit of a happy ending with this conflict.
6 Cece's Temporary Engagement
When Cece became randomly became engaged to Shivrang, it was understandably a huge shock to Schmidt. He was in love with her at that point in time, so finding out that she planned on spending her life with somebody else was immensely hard for him.
He was hurt badly enough where he purposely aimed to sabotage her wedding. Obviously, this was unacceptable behavior, but it did show just how much this was hurting him. Cece and Shivrang would of course not get married in the end, as their feelings were both for other people.
5 Seeing His Friend End Up With Cece
Schmidt ruined his second relationship with Cece by dating Elizabeth at the same time. Therefore, it was entirely acceptable for Cece to try to move on. It was hard for Schmidt though when he opened the door for Coach to ask her out.
Schmidt would end up accidentally seeing the two kissings, and it was extremely upsetting to him. Anybody in that situation would be understandably sad, as seeing somebody you love with your close friend is just heartbreaking.
4 Constantly Belittled At Work
When it came to his professional life, Schmidt definitely was doing quite well. Yet, the primary issue was that his workplace was immensely toxic, as he often was the person who his coworkers and employers were mean to.
Schmidt also would end up not being taken seriously when it came to his ideas for the company. This was a bit detrimental, as he actually had strong pitches. Nonetheless, he never seemed happy with his job because of how poorly he was treated by everyone.
3 Used By Fawn
Fawn was the first woman that Schmidt seemed to genuinely like after Cece. However, he was not necessarily aware that Fawn was simply using him for her political career. There was no actual love in that dynamic, and it was rather difficult to watch.
Schmidt sacrificed a lot to help Fawn but eventually realized that he wanted a real connection. It thankfully led him back to Cece, as her feelings for him were genuine. However, one cannot ignore how poorly Fawn treated him.
2 Cece's Mom Didn't Approve Of Him
When Cece's mom found out about Schmidt, she immediately rejected him. This was especially challenging for Schmidt, as he worked so hard for her approval. He, of course, orchestrated a Bollywood dance at the wedding shower for Cece's mother.
He left a plethora of voicemails for her as well, as he worked continuously to get her to come to their wedding. He did successfully win her over in time, but the pain he felt when she originally did not was extremely high.
1 He Missed His Own Wedding
Before he knew that Cece's mom decided to come to the wedding, he went on a plane to Portland to try to talk to her. When he found out that she was there, he tried to leave, but the airplane was stuck in the terminal.
He then had to make the trip there and back, which sadly, led to him missing the entire wedding. Thankfully though, he came home to a big surprise, as the gang prepared a small wedding in the loft that same night. It was a beautiful end to an otherwise abysmal day for Schmidt.
