Airbnb to lay off nearly 25% of workforce, or nearly 1,900 people
Airbnb Inc. is slashing nearly one-fourth of its workforce, or 1,900 employees, as it grapples with a free-falling travel industry. The cutbacks, first reported by The Information, were announced to employees by company Chief Executive Brian Chesky on Tuesday afternoon. "We are collectively living through the most harrowing crisis of our lifetime, and as it began to unfold, global travel came to a standstill," Chesky told employees in a note. "Airbnb's business has been hit hard, with revenue this year forecasted to be less than half of what we earned in 2019." The cuts come days after Gig-based companies such as Lyft Inc. announced layoffs.
