The final group of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup gets underway with Panama taking on Trinidad & Tobago. The prevailing expectations are that if everything goes according to plan, these two teams will be battling it out for second place in the knockout rounds. With the United States virtually always guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals, this opening match could very well decide who gets that second spot.

Panama prepared for this competition by playing two difficult South American opponents in friendlies. They lost both, 3-0, but it’s debatable what to take away from that. The results themselves don’t look great, but playing difficult opponents like that could be better preparation than actually winning. Los Canaleros are a year out from their first-ever World Cup appearance. And while they were 0-3 in Russia, perhaps that experience on the world’s biggest stage will help them this summer as they try to surprise the region.
On the other hand, T&T are very much in a rebuilding process. After their stunning victory over the USA in the final match of World Cup qualifying in October 2017, they’ve won just twice in 10 matches. Head coach Dennis Lawrence has a tough task on his hand in trying to get the Soca Warriors back near the top of Concacaf and contending with the best teams in the confederation. A good performance this summer could be the starting point they’ve been looking for.
