Bob Myers says he expects Draymond Green back Friday or Saturday

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Warriors forward Draymond Green is officially listed as doubtful for Wednesday night’s game against Memphis, but general manager Bob Myers expects Green to return from his nagging shoulder injury later in the week. “He wanted to play today, but he's being cautious,” Myers said Wednesday afternoon in an interview on 95.7 The Game. “I'd expect him back on Friday (against the Lakers) or Saturday (against the Nuggets). Earlier in his career, he probably wouldn't have told us about this injury... Читать дальше...

‘Happy End’ Movie Review: Michael Haneke’s Latest Tackles Social Media

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Michael Haneke‘s “Happy End,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, lacks the historical heft of “The White Ribbon” or the emotional through-line of “Amour,” both winners of the festival’s Palme d’Or prize. It’s a more austere and enigmatic work about — among many other things — existential malaise among France’s top 1 percent. The compelling film is like the Austrian director’s answer to the age-old question, “What do you get for the man who has everything?” And though his answer is simple, one must put in the work to get there.

FSU fraternity pledge died ‘alone in a room full of people’ at party

Kfor.com

When a fellow Florida State University fraternity pledge discovered Andrew Coffey had no pulse the morning after an alcohol-filled party, he didn’t immediately call 911. Instead, the pledge called and texted five other members of the fraternity first, causing an 11-minute delay in summoning help. Those 11 minutes would not have saved Coffey’s life, but the delay was broadly representative of the culture of the fraternity, according to a grand jury presentment released Tuesday. “The brothers, pledges... Re: Huge Disparity In Wages

Small Heath Alliance

The problem has been the awful managers not the older players. Zola confided the hell out of them and made everybody realise they couldn’t play tippy tappy and then Harry slagged them off. In the meantime everybody is told a whole new team is needed but those new players come in on higher wages and then play even worse. The old players are getting slagged off thinking everything was fine before his all started. We were 7 th in the league.

Play differentials are fine when new players are... Читать дальше...

Eagles coach: Different looks under Pagano helping Raiders dial up pressure

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It has been a month since the Raiders handed their defense to assistant head coach John Pagano, and one effect is evident to this week’s opposing head coach, Doug Pederson of the Philadelphia Eagles. “I think you’re seeing a little more pressure out of this group,” Pederson said on a conference call Wednesday. “I don’t want to say it’s a complete overhaul. But structurally, probably I’d say it’s the pressure, a little more single-high (safety), cover one, playing a little more man (coverage). Читать дальше...

A Bit About Tweed

Paper Blog

There are two often-recited stories for how tweed got its name. The first is that it was originally a misreading of tweel – an old Scottish word for twill – which was supposedly written on an invoice somewhere. How that misreading eventually made it into the more general vernacular, nobody knows, but it’s probably the pithiness of the story that counts. The other guess is that the word tweed refers to how the cloth originally came from the valley of the River Tweed. That, to me, seems like the more likely reason. Читать дальше...

Major US companies say workers will see some of tax windfall

Times Union

WASHINGTON (AP) — AT&T, Comcast, Wells Fargo and Boeing — among other major companies — are trying to build goodwill in the wake of President Donald Trump's tax cuts by finding ways to pass along some of their likely savings to employees. But Democratic lawmakers and corporate watchdogs say the move is a public relations stunt that pales in comparison to the profits the companies' shareholders and executives will reap because of the lower tax rates. The stock market, as well, has risen on the belief the savings will largely go investors... Читать дальше...

Young immigrants to wait until '18 to learn their fate in US

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The fate of hundreds of thousands of young immigrants living here illegally and facing deportation will be decided next year, a Republican senator says. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake said Wednesday he received assurances from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that the Senate will vote in January on bipartisan legislation.
